Pneumatic balloon dilatation in primary achalasia: the long-term

follow-up results

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15816461

" Pneumatic dilatation was performed on 50 adult patients with a mean age

41.42+/-18.07 years. ... The mean diameter of the esophagus was

regressed to 26.51+/-7.69 mm from 36.66+/-11.23 mm (p<0.001) and the

mean diameter of the lower esophageal sphincter was increased to

8.38+/-3.12 mm from 2.58+/-1.13 mm (p<0.001) with pneumatic dilatation. "

In that study the mean diameter at the narrowing increased 5.8mm. Some

would have increase more and some less. Your's increased 7mm so you beat

the mean and in that study but then your starting diameter of 5mm is as

good as some in the study ended with and better than any in the study

started with.

I would say that you may be an example of why getting treatment before

the esophagus gets worse is a good idea.

I am glad your results are so good.

Hi Eva,

Just a quick " Hi " , and hope all is well with you and your family. How are you

feeling? Are you having symptoms? Do you think you will be need another

dilation?

Best regards,

Bonnie

Subject: barium study

I had a barium study on 5/16/11 and there was an improvement over last year

2/10. I had the dilatation done on 4/22/10. I have not had any surgery nor

prior dilatations.

My report states:

" ...narrowing of the distal esophagus just above the gastroesophageal junction

with some distention of the esophagus proximal to this. Both of these findigs

have improved when compared to the previous exam. Currently, the area of

narrowing measures a maximum of 1.2 cm - on the previous exam it measured 5mm.

Distention of the E above this area has also decreased. Some barium

persistently remains in the esophagus above this area. .... There is a poor

motility within the E with tertiary contractions. Proximal Esophagus appears

normal.

Impression: increase in the diameter of the area of narrowing in the distal

esophagus with decrease of esophagel distention. "

I think that this ia a very positive report and attribute the Traditional

Chinese medicine (TCM)treatments (herbs, acupuncture, diet) to these positive

results. I have not talked to my MD about the report yet, but in his comments

with the report he said that the food is probably staying in the E since the

barium stayed in there. I don't get food coming back up, and I can eat almost

anything, but I try not to eat too much raw and stay low on the spices.

Also, I have had other alternative treatments in addition to the TCM which have

helped.

Your comments are welcome.

Thank you, Notan, for your comments. I do believe that having the dilatation

last year was a MUST and it has helped me a lot.

I will keep you posted.

Hi Bonnie,

I'm feeling great except for the weight the I gained back. Did not want to gain

so much. I'm having very few symptoms. Had the Barium test becuase my MD

pushed for it. At this point I don't need another dilatation.

My family is doing well...my daughter is expecting again and my grandson, Lucas,

just turned two last week. I'm am so blessed and joyful.

How are you doing? Feeling good?

Blessings
