Hi

" What could be the possible reason of the spasm "

In my case it happens when food is in the e. I wash it away with a Coke, water

or a hot coffee. Only lasts a few minutes. Use BUTTER to make it slip down!

confusion regarding the spasms which i guess A patients experience regularly.

What could be the possible reason of the spasm - Empty stomach? I discussed with

the doctor and he was of the view the 'spasms indicate that the problem exists

and we would have to do the dilatation again in 2-3 months'. My understanding

has been differenet ... i thought, and also by learning through others'

experiences, spasms are something very regular to A patients irrespective of the

patients' condition. I mean, patients can experience spasms right after the

first day of dilatation (when the barium test indicates the dilatation was

successful) and similarly patients can experience spasms at the peak of the

achalasia. I think i am making you confuse - to make it simple ... why do

achalasia patients experience spasms?

I don't know why I experience the spasms but mine got worse after having the

botox injection. Mine affect my right side and radiate into the jaw. As long

as I have something to drink at the onset I can make it stop. I think the

spasms are related to the fact that the nerves that help direct the E in how

to work malfunction and these spasms could be a result of misfiring of the

nerves.

Slightly embarrassing but I have noticed that I seem to get bad spasms when my

tummy is full of air that can't seem to find it's way out. Once in awhile I will

have nights when the spasms are horrible and unrelenting, but stop as soon as I

am able to pass a large amount of gas or go to the bathroom. I have found that a

very hot water bottle on my chest can help make the pain bearable, as well as

lying completely flat and then rotating the lower half of my body to one side or

the other while my shoulders stay flat on the floor can help. I don't know what

I would do during one of these spells without a hot water bottle. I used to

carry one around with me when I got them frequently.

There are a least two main reasons, irritation and nerve damage, but

there are other reasons for pain, NCCPs, that could be confused with

spasms. Irritation and pain could come from esophagitis, ulcers, acid

reflux, fermentation acid and distention from trapped food in the

esophagus, healing from treatments, (surgery, dilatation and Botox). The

esophagus normally responds to pressure in the stomach and in the

esophagus, acid in the esophagus, and swallows. Trapped gas in the

stomach and food or gas trapped in the esophagus can cause the esophagus

to respond. Because the nerves don't always work right these

stimulations could cause a spasm. Likewise, it should try to clear acid

in the esophagus but the dysfunction may cause a spasm instead. Enough

stimulation of these types can also cause pain without a spasm. Pain may

also just be the nerves and brain trying to use signals from nerves that

are dysfunctional, telling you there is pain where there should not be any.

Your pain, may or may not be a spasm, it may or may not be because you

need more treatments. If you need a treatment your esophagus is likely

to have more things irritating it, but that may not be your reason.
