No advice, unfortunately, but wanted to say my husband can't sleep because of

his cough. He also sleeps on about 4 pillows --practically sitting up -- &

always ends up on the couch & falls asleep watching tv. The cough is a problem

all day long -- he sounds like he's been smoking for 80 years but has never

touched a cigarette -- he always blows it off & says it's his reflux -- maybe it

is, but it's gone on & on & on --he had his myotomy 2 1/2 years ago.

First, thanks to everyone who replied from my previous post about treatment and

age. Thank you. I am near DC so any doctors you recommend on the east coast

would be appreciated. Also, do you all recommend getting the myotomy sooner

rather than later.

Regarding waking with a cough, I get this too, and have even woken up to

projectile vomiting (that's always fun). I have to make sure I don't eat

anything after 7pm, and don't drink anything after 8pm. If I do take a sip of

water, I have to wait an hour before going to bed. I usually go to bed around

11pm - 12:am. It took a while for my family to get used to eating dinner by 6pm,

but now that we're used to it, it's no big deal. Also, if I do eat later than

8pm, I have to be sure it's cool for me to stay up till 1 am or so. I may still

have coughing though. This has worked for me. If I have a cold, though, I'm up

all night with coughing. And, it all gets worse with stress.

I would make sure he is vertical for 4 hours before going to bed. This goes for

naps as well. I have to organize my entire day around eating, and I pretty much

eat constantly until 6pm. Also have him take a chewable multi (gummies are good)

for the immune system. I have a strong immune system and I think that's how I

can manage so well, but I will say that when I did have a cold about a month ago

it pretty much derailed me, and I'm still trying to get rid of that cough.

I can so relate to coughing and projectiles coming from either my nose or my

mouth!  I personally can't eat anything after 5pm, or I'm in big trouble!

Sometimes, even then I cough all night.  Last week I had some surgery to remove

an ovary via robotics, and have coughed so much since then, that I have to go

back today so my doctor can look at the incisions that I have stretched, eek!!

It is so enjoyable to find people that have the same symptoms, but so sad at the

same time that we all have to deal with this!

Cheer to us all!!

Jen

Raise the head of the bed on blocls of wood or bricks and use more pillows if

necessary inc. one under the kness to stop him sliding down the bed. That is

what i do.

I am 63 years old and for about 6 years, I had been suffering from difficulty in

swallowing; uncomfortable esophageal spasms, regurgitation of food and liquid

during the day and coughing up during the night ruining restful sleep. I was

diagnosed with A in Jan 2009, because of the coughing up at night after which

the A got progressively worse. I had lost about 45 – 50 lbs, was very

dehydrated and weak, pale and looked old. Trying to eat was torture and keeping

liquid down was difficult.

In March 2010, Dr. Zhijiang Chen, a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doc, put

me on Chinese herbal tea, herbal oils that I rub on chest and joints and

acupuncture, along with a special diet (pureed vegetable soups with a little

meat, no chips, soda, coffee, chocolate, candy, cinnamon, nothing spicey or

salty, or frozen. (No heating pads on my chest which I used to do before I saw

him.) Part of my diagnosis in TCM terms was too much " heat " and " dryness. " The

herbs worked on the spasms too and helped with the coughing up at night after a

short time.

I also had a dilatation at the end of April 2010 which helped a lot.

After I had been on Dr. Chen's regimen for two months I was already feeling

considerably better. I completely stopped waking up at night and coughing up

food or the white foam.

In the last 4 months, I have had a little difficulty swallowing only two times.

Now, it has been a little over a year and I've had less and less symptoms to

where now I am almost symptom free. I can enjoy having a meal with family and

friends. I am much stronger, look younger and have gained most of my weight back

(the only downside). No spasms, no pain, no regurgitation at night and rarely

during the day.

I've also started Tai Chi for exercise and relaxation. I was advised to relax

more and not to overdo in terms of work as I had been prone to do.

One word of caution, Dr. Chen really knows what he is doing. He teaches Chinese

Medicine at the Midwest School of Oriental Medicine in Chicago and has a

doctorate from the US in TCM. He practice TCM for many years in China. So if

you want to incorporate TCM, you have to find a really good TCM doctor. I am

also still working with an MD and will have a barium study done next week just

to see how my esophagus looks and works.

Hope this helps. Eva (Chicagoland)
