Sounds scary and interesting. How old is your son? I think emptying my e is

needed, but I am worried about the fact that it isn't making it to my esophagus

in the first place. I don't exactly have any extra weight on me.

Hi again, Becca!

Not throw up but " empty the E " ... there are many here who can tell you the

intricate details of how it is done.. I however cannot, but my son, can.. It is

quite an art form..

It was necessary for him in order to be able to sleep so he would not

asphyxiate.

you can also search this on the site.

Hope this helps.

Alrighty. I don't really feel like typing out my whole story again, so I will

use my mystic powers of copy and paste.

You can check out this link for my story:

achalasia/message/60620

Anyway, I've had this wicked cough for about a week now and it only seems to be

getting worse. Also, I am pretty sure my food is staying in my esophagus again.

I have been trying my best to sleep vertically, but I am afraid I might be

aspirating into my lungs a bit, hence the cough.

I obviously need to go in to see a doctor, but I am going to be 18 in 5 months

and doctors who can actually help me won't touch me until then. So does anyone

have any ideas about what's going on?

Oh! And also... (this is disgusting) I have been having orange diarrhea every

day. Don't know what that means, but I haven't had a normal stool for over a

week now.

Well, it is late. I hope someone can help. :) Goodnight... or whatever time is

for you. Thanks!

Hello, Becca.

My son is now 20 years old.  We found this board when he just turned 14.

Emptying your " E " before bed will help you a lot. whatever you eat if it is in

your E, but it is just sitting there decomposing.. like at the end of a sock..

in the toe.. nowhere to go.

Do you lay on your left side when sleeping? just curious..

..

Some people here have used this method..

Like Cameron~ he would go into the bathroom, and drink a very large glass of

warm water, use his finger to make the gag reflex work and bend over the toilet

to empty out.

This was at a time, when he was using the weight of the water to push the solids

( nutrition) through into the stomach, the rest he brought up, he would then eat

a little more, and repeat. He was very much aware that a good portion of water

was going in his stomach and filling him up too..Before bed, he would do the

same to make sure he was " empty " so as not to aspirate.  Some have used hot

water, or soda or whatever...

You will need to search messages before 2009... that was the last time I see any

great discussion regarding " how to "

Message.. 2009

The second point is to do with emptying the E. Sorry if this sounds

over-simplistic, but have you tried holding your head over the toilet, waist

bent as far as you can, so that gravity takes over? Drinking warm water helps

(but when you are upright LOL). Pre-myotomy I found that that was all I needed

to do. There is nothing coming from the stomach because it hasn't even GOT

there, so there is no retching as such, as in vomiting.

msg 54175

When I realised

that it was not going anywhere and was causing me distress I would go to the

bathroom and lean over the toilet as described. I would use warm water in

between emptyings (it did not usually all come out in one go) until I felt the

water going down. What a relief! At that point I could actually go back and eat

some more if I wished.

Hi

I do this every night watching Leno. I have an Ensure plus or a 16 oz bottle of

water, try to swallow it, it fills up the e , Then any junk comes up. I have a

spit up bottle.

This is important!!!

Hi Ray,

I thought you were going to say that watching Leno makes you throw up!  If

that's the case, put Leno on your DVR anytime you need to regurgitate.  ;-)

On a more serious note, since " clearance " is the name of the game to help keep

your E as best off as possible, my GI suggested to me, and I follow it

religiously, that before starting any meal, have a glass of your drink of choice

that best gets the food to go down, regardless of whether or not you feel food

is there. Likewise, to do the same at the end of the meal. If you're sitting

with food in your E from your previous meal when you start your next meal, you

will only build up the residue, which over time will probably cause the E to

stretch and dilate.

I never stuck my finger down my throat in order to regurgitate. I found that by

swallowing air (a reverse burp, if you will), I could build up enough air

pressure to force food back up.  Sounds strange, but it worked for me.  Also,

I

found that jumping in place would somehow enable more food to go down to the

stomach, plus there were cardio benefits as well. I normally hiccup when food

thats been sitting in my E slips into the stomach, so its my " confirming " signal

that when I jump in place that it works.

Hi,

Just a question came in my mind ... 'Emptying your " E " before bed will help you

a lot " . Does this mean that we get spams when the " E " is not empty? And if the

food remains in the " E " and is unable to get to the stomach - doesnt this mean

that we need dilatation or for some people surgery?

Regards

Food in the esophagus can stimulate and irritate it which for some

people can cause spasm or other pain. What happens for one person does

not happen for all. Some people get spasms when they have gone for some

time without eating.

There is always some resistance at the LES. If you depend on gravity to

move food through the LES it must provide enough force to overcome that

resistance. As the column of food and drink becomes shorter the force

pushing it through the LES becomes less. The last of the food may not

have enough force above it to push it through. This is why it is a good

idea to finish a meal with a drink and even to have another drink a

while later.

Depending on how much food is staying in the esophagus it may indicate a

need for more treatment. If the esophagus become too sigmoid or dilated

gravity may not work as well and even more treatment may not be able to

change that.

When I get up in the morning I use listerine mouth wash after brushing my

teeth, and for some reason it makes me gag.I notice that when I gag I bring food

up from the previous night that has been laying in the Esophagus all night .This

can't be good and I have also noticed that I have been having more GERD at night

also, although I don't use any pillows to prop myself up.I can't imagine having

that food in there all the tine can be any good for the esophagus.I wonder also

if this could be some of the cause of the nausea I have all the time.
