Guest guest
Hi thanks so much. My heller worked well and I could eat almost anything for the first few years. I had an endoscope and barium a few months ago to figure out what was going on and the problem is that the general motility is very bad and the upper end is going into spasm. I just always feel like I should be able to cope and constantly beat myself up about it all when I struggle. Kay xx > > didn't you have a hellers? are you still having a lot of trouble swallowing? A successful hellers will never make you 'normal' but after my hellers I could eat or drink most of what I wanted most of the time and could easily eat out with others with no issues. There are always going to be foods that you don't tolerate - I just avoided those. Do you need a follow up scope? It's possible for some scar tissue to build up after surgery which can create swallowing problems again. > You shouldn't have to be this way. > I hope you get a chance to meet a few of our members face to face - it's a great experience. > > Happy Swallowing! > ~ in NC >
Guest guest
Kay - first things first. STRESS is VERY bad for us. Across the board - all symptoms get worse with stress so please, please, please keep reading posts and maybe meet up with someone so you realize that what you are going through is the beast that is achalasia and you have NOTHING to beat yourself up for- we did not ask for this!! maybe it will help as you are able to hear more of our stories and realize we all go through this to an extent. None of us has good motility - that's why the heller is not a cure but a fix. If I may, have you tried a low-level anti-depresssant? Many of us have used seratonin uptake receptor drugs to help with the spasms. I still take the lowest dose of amitryptaline every night as there seems to be a family connection to reduced levels of seratonin. It never made my spasms go away completely but it helped a whole lot. If it can reduce your spasms, you should be able to eat better I would think. Also, have you tracked your food intake and figured out what works doesn't work for you? I still find that raw carrots are tough but if they are shredded in a salad or cooked they are fine. There may just be a few things that you can't tolerate. I still have problems with popcorn. Before my ectomy I could no longer have coffee, butter or chocolate. I hope some of this helps. I hope you get to a good point where you can swallow comfortably again soon. ~ in NC > > > > didn't you have a hellers? are you still having a lot of trouble swallowing?
