Guest guest
In the spirit of sharing.... After years of not understanding why by swallowing/hiccupping/regurgitating issues were happening, I was finally diagnosed with A in late 2009. After some dilations (that had mixed effects), I opted for the Hellers last April - and it really has changed my world. My recovery was very straightforward (nearly no pain other than a few aches, so I never took pain medication other than a few days of liquid Tylenol) and since then I'm in a different world. I can eat - which, when I write it down, looks pretty silly. I mean, everyone can eat, right? But people with our affliction understand that this very basic function can't be taken for granted. I'm now careful to really chew my food and to drink plenty of liquids - with these provisos I am able to eat pretty much whatever I like. I don't have to segregate myself when out at dinner for fear of sudden regurgitation (nor excuse myself to run to the restroom), and I can order from the same menu as everyone else. I realize that I have to take care of myself and am always conscious of where I was before the operation, but I'm in a much better place now.
