Hi Phil, wishing you all the best with your appointment on Friday, are you

preparing for surgery?  My comment is regarding the liquids that you say seem

to

come up later than before.  Well, before my surgery (Heller Myotomy/Dor),

anything I ate seemed to linger in my esophagus for several hours.  Although it

would " feel " like things went down, they actually didn't always.  So, if I

leaned forward sometimes things could easily come up.  Another thing that would

bug me, is that if I took a " pill " , I would drink a full glass of water and push

and push that down, but it could pop back up even after 20 minutes!  Now that I

have had the surgery it does not happen at all!

Best regards, Julee So. Calif.

Subject: Heller Op on Friday

Hello to all!

I have had achalasia for the past 6 years, although it was only 12 months ago I

went to get my swallowing problem looked at. I started out struggling to eat

food, something I had never had a problem with before. I would bring up

undigested food as I was trying to eat it or shortly after.

This has changed now, I now can manage to force most things down with plenty of

liquids, but I now bring the liquid up a lot later. Has anyone else had this

develop in their symptoms over a period of time?

I have had a barium swallow, this showed up the classic " birds beak " picture of

my oesophagus. I have also had a gastroscapy (normal, if very unpleasant) and a

manomatry test (inconclusive, as they couldn't get the tubes into my stomach).

I finally got my date for the op through last week, its this Friday. Has anyone

had the op done in Manchester UK? If so, who did the op? Was it successful?

Kind regards

Phil

I had one of my surgeries at Radcliff Hospital in OXford and Mr Maynard did

the surgery.  He is a very good surgeon and has a great doctor patient

demeanor.

Hi ,

It's been 2 weeks since the op and things have kind have gone backwards with the

eating. I struggle more now that before the op, the team said that may happen

for a few weeks before things kind of stabalise. They didn't really give me a

diet sheet either, so I have just been eating softish food for now. My stomach

is full a lot sooner though? Maybe because of the fundoplication?

I have had no problems with reflux as of yet (touch wood). The next couple of

weeks are when I'm hoping to see the benifit. Did your surgery correct

everything straight away?

Kind regards

Phil

Phil,

I also was very disappointed after my HM at the Cleveland Clinic last August.

It seemed that my swallowing was worse after the operation than before.  I went

back and had a dilation that really helped and I am pleased with the results.

My swallowing continues to be good as long as I make good choices about where,

what, when and how much I eat.

Phil,

I had my HM on 1-11-10 and was released with a soft diet and esophageal soft

diet sheet. I was rather surprised as some are restricted to liquids for 2-4

weeks. I am happy to say that I have had no problems. Everyone heals at a

different rate, it may be for you that you may just want to stick to liquids for

awhile, jello, broth, cottage cheese, smoothies, applesauce, canned peaches,

Activia, yogurts with no fruit, etc. to give yourself more time to heal. Drink

plenty of fluids, don't let yourself become constipated. Stay away from meats,

yeast breads, nuts, popcorn, raw vegies and fruits. Don't bend over, squat if

you must, don't lift heavy things. Just take it easy and don't rush things.

Just a thought and suggestion and I hope this helps.

Hi Phil,

I'm not sure which you are referring to, but heck I can answer also!  In

my situation the surgery was good immediately.  But, that is not always the

case, as you have heard from others we are not all the same.  You may need

further dilitation  if the swallowing is not good enough.  At 2 weeks, you

should still be very careful and stick to softer foods, avoiding seeds, chips

and meat.  Just eat ground meat, that is much easier.

I still feel very " full " fast.  I still eat smaller portions, my doctor feels

that because I was sick for so long, my stomach cannot handle so much food at

once.  The amazing thing is that it stays down and I don't have the regurg or

need to vomit anymore.  I hope you feel better, it takes a good 3-4 months for

all the kinks to get worked out.

Take care, Julee So Calif.

I have had major GERD since I was pregnant with my first child, 48 years

ago. Many Tums, Prilosec, and other meds. I had the Hellers Myotomy and the

Dor's Fundiplicataion. The Fundo repositioned the hiatal hernia that was

causing the reflux. I have not had a moment of reflux since the surgery. The

surgery was done 3-4 years ago when I was 70. The swallowing is much

better, but I still get occasional stuck food...no spasms. My local GI had no

idea what was wrong with me and spent over a year shrugging his shoulders

while I lost weight and my E went sigmoid. My surgery was at Cedars Sinai in

LA.

Glad you are handling this for her. With todays technology this could be a

lifetime solution. She will get a lot of relief.

in Santa Brabara

Hello Fe busse,

Who is your daughters doctor? My Heller Myotomy included a Dor//Wrap. Is

your

daughter also having that done? I also was concerned about possible acid

reflux, but so far I have not had any problems at all. The surgery has

been

amazing, I can actually eat!!! Nothing but positive things to say in my

situation, I have had achalasia for 22yrs. I take no med's of any kind.

My

best advise is to follow your doctors orders, she will probably be on

clear

liquids and then soft foods. Just take it slowly and plan ahead, she will

be

starving! But very soon, I think she will be eating by a couple of weeks.

The

spasms can be strong after surgery for the first month or more, so find

what

works best for that. I have not had any spasms now in months, my surgery

was 6

months ago.

I'm so sorry to hear that a child has to go through this, but I am so

happy that

she is getting the help and will soon be much better! Keeping you in my

thoughts and prayers! Keep me posted!!!! I do not regret surgery one

bit, only

that I wish I could have had it sooner. It's no biggie, she will do fine.

The

first week is the toughest, then it gets much better.

would " feel " like things went down, they actually didn't always. So, if I

leaned forward sometimes things could easily come up. Another thing that

would

bug me, is that if I took a " pill " , I would drink a full glass of water

and push

and push that down, but it could pop back up even after 20 minutes! Now

that I

have had the surgery it does not happen at all!

Best regards, Julee So. Calif.

Subject: Heller Op on Friday

Hello to all!

I have had achalasia for the past 6 years, although it was only 12 months

ago I

went to get my swallowing problem looked at. I started out struggling to

eat

food, something I had never had a problem with before. I would bring up

undigested food as I was trying to eat it or shortly after.

This has changed now, I now can manage to force most things down with

plenty of

liquids, but I now bring the liquid up a lot later. Has anyone else had

this

develop in their symptoms over a period of time?

I have had a barium swallow, this showed up the classic " birds beak "

picture of

my oesophagus. I have also had a gastroscapy (normal, if very unpleasant)

and a

manomatry test (inconclusive, as they couldn't get the tubes into my

stomach).

I finally got my date for the op through last week, its this Friday. Has

anyone

had the op done in Manchester UK? If so, who did the op? Was it successful?

Kind regards

Phil

Hello Fe busse,

Who is your daughters doctor?  My Heller Myotomy included a Dor//Wrap.  Is

your

daughter also having that done?  I also was concerned about possible acid

reflux, but so far I have not had any problems at all.  The surgery has been

amazing, I can actually eat!!!  Nothing but positive things to say in my

situation, I have had achalasia for 22yrs.  I take no med's of any kind.  My

best advise is to follow your doctors orders, she will probably be on clear

liquids and then soft foods.  Just take it slowly and plan ahead, she will be

starving!  But very soon, I think she will be eating by a couple of weeks.

The

spasms can be strong after surgery for the first month or more, so find what

works best for that.  I have not had any spasms now in months, my surgery was 6

months ago.

I'm so sorry to hear that a child has to go through this, but I am so happy that

she is getting the help and will soon be much better!  Keeping you in my

thoughts and prayers!  Keep me posted!!!!  I do not regret surgery one bit,

only

that I wish I could have had it sooner.  It's no biggie, she will do fine.

The

first week is the toughest, then it gets much better.

Julee So Calif.

Phil

Hi Phil, wishing you all the best with your appointment on Friday, are you

preparing for surgery? My comment is regarding the liquids that you say seem to

come up later than before. Well, before my surgery (Heller Myotomy/Dor),

anything I ate seemed to linger in my esophagus for several hours. Although it

would " feel " like things went down, they actually didn't always. So, if I

Hi , my daugther's GI doc here at Univ of Michigan hosp is Dr

Scheimann (just released last month as one of best US DOCS in America) and

thoracic surgeon is Dr Reddy (supposed to be Dr Chang but he is fully booked and

also best Doc in US American Journal).  I am more worried of the spasm because

I

always see my daughter in tears and pain. They gave her nitroglycerin to take

for the spasm but has bad side effects (severe headache). I am so happy and

relieved of all the positive things people write at this ACHALASIA support

group.  I will include all of you in my prayers..Thanks and God bless.
