Guest guest
Hi Philip, My name is Becca. I'm seventeen years old, and I have had Achalasia for about 11 years now approx (I wasn't diagnosed until I was 8). I had a Hellers with a partial fundo when I was almost nine. At that time I weighed only 40 lbs, and was extremely malnourished. I have had Achalasia for as long as I can remember now, but I can't say I'm the best eater. I eat small amounts frequently throughout the day whenever I feel hungry, but I find I get full pretty fast so I don't end up eating much at one time. I'm 5' 2 " and weigh 93 lbs. I am supposed to stay away from foods that are sticky or foods that have a tough skin like apples, hot dogs, and grapes. The worst thing for me is popcorn, but I have to admit I cheat (but I pay for it later). The worst two symptoms I have still are esophageal spasms (which I am sure you are more than familiar with) and this nasty syndrome called dumping syndrome which has pretty much rendered my lactose intolerant. As far as gaining weight back, I highly suggest getting some of those ensure shakes. I pretty much lived off of them when i was younger, and in a sense, they saved my life by helping me gain enough weigh to have the Hellers. If your weight loss becomes extremely severe (and I cannot believe I am recommending this because it is one of the most hated moments of my childhood) you may want to look into a feeding tube. I don't know what your situation is exactly, but it is an option if you absolutely cannot get food or liquid down. Best of luck! Well..you probably will never be able to wolf down cheeseburgers with reckless abandon but there is a wealth of info on this site regarding diets. You can use keywords to search previous posts and even diet lists on the database. There's also an address list in the database of Florida members. How, when and what you can eat varies from person to person. You'll get 200 different answers. Here's the first one. For me, sometimes are better than others for food to go down. If I get " corked " up from a hard to digest food which gets stuck,I can't eat for a day or two and nothing takes which sucks. I do get some relief from fizzy water and alka seltzer. Again, works for me but can excacerbate the condition in others. I've had luck with weight gain from modifying my diet with more liquids and supplements mixed with juice or milk. GNC has a 2200 Supplement mix which can provide Kcals when the noodles aren't working. It is.. Different for everyone ! I had numerous dilations starting when I was 22 and a Heller in 2001, when I was 41. I was getting concerned about the increased chance of a torn esophagus. Surgery helped, but for me, it was not a cure all. so...I've learned to accept my condition rather than opt for more radical treatment. Again, resources on this website will enable you to research info and find others who we share this odd condition with. I have a place in Sanibel Island so I'll holla the next time I'm down u Miami way. Best Wishes M (D Mac) Santa > > Hi, My name is Philip . Im 24 years old and i live in Miami, Florida!
