My husband is still having complications from his lapro myotomy and stomach wrap

in feb. He has had 4 dialations since to get rid of the ledge or shelf that was

caused when the stomach wrap was done. He has lost 60 lbs. since the surgery.

He is nauseous all the time, lethargic and vomits atleast once a week. He eats

small healthy meals like he is supposed to. He looks anorexic and sickly. His

stomach gets very bloated once a week at the least and has missed more work than

he has ever in his life! We are struggling financialy because of it. I am

about to contact an lawyer about this. He is so lethargic and is getting

depressed. He was better off before the surgery when he was choking on his

food. Atleast he was feeling good and could work. The endoscopies and

dialations helped with the spasms and is allowing the food to pass a little

better but it is still sitting in his stomach to long, causing bloating and

rotten egg burps. He has been in the emergency room a few months ago for all of

the above. We are getting scared and worried that this has caused permanent

damage to his body and his malabsorbtion is taking a toll on his system. Any

advice or someone who has had the same problem PLEASE HELP. I have a call in to

his dr. so if there are any ideas of what to ask him or things to check to speed

up the process for procedures, colonoscopy? xrays? tests??what to do??? Steph

I don't know where you are located or who the doctor/hospital is, but it

sounds like it may be time to seek out another opinion somewhere else by a

surgeon that is very experienced with achalasia.

If food is getting to the stomach fast enough but it is not emptying

from the stomach then the problem is no longer the esophagus. Have they

done anything to speed the emptying of the stomach? Beyond taking a look

with a scope to see what action is in the stomach, a barium X-ray is

used to see if food stays in the stomach after a fast. It is often used

when gastroparesis is suspected. There is also gastric emptying

scintigraphy. It is one type of gastric-emptying study. If stomach

motility is a problem, treatment options generally include: diet,

medications, surgery, and dilatation or Botox of the pyloric sphincter.

Also, but experimental, there is Electrical Gastric Stimulation. It is

like a pacemaker for your stomach. Diet is usually the first choice --

less fat, less fibrous food, more water and small meals.

There are other, less common tests that can also be done:

Gastric duodenal manometry -- to test the contractions of the stomach.

Scintigraphic Gastric Accommodation -- to test how well the stomach relaxes.

Small Intestinal X-ray -- to see if something in the small intestines is

blocking the outlet of the stomach.

Stomach motility problems can be caused by damage to the vagus nerve. It

is possible to damage the vagus nerve during a heller myotomy for achalasia.

So sorry to hear that your husband is still sick and dealing with all of this. 

Sounds like the group has given you some good obtions, see if the doctor will

run more tests on the stomach...tell them you need ANSWERS!!!  If they are not

willing to help you then research some of the experts and try to get to one

asap!  Sadly, it could just be a minor surgery to help fix this, but you have

to

be pushy with them.  I wish you all the best!

I have noticed the same thing. Seems like it didn't used to bother me but maybe as I've gotten older, it affects me more. I find that when I get home from work and errands and it's dark, I'm then ready to pack it in and go to bed and watch TV..... whether it's 6 pm or 8 pm.

I have started trying to "schedule" a activity or chore (and make myself do it) after dark. It keeps me vertical longer and a little more active. I was thinking also if you played some of your favorite music while you're doing this chore, it could also help your mood.

Good for you for going to the gym 4 times a week ! I am surprised that that doesn't do more to help you. I've been having trouble lately getting myself to go and I think DST is part of the problem as my time to workout is in the evenings.

The fact that we now have DST more than true time may have something to do with it. I've actually never liked it, having grown up without it and then having it imposed on pretty much the entire country back in (I think) 1967, but at least it was for a reasonable length of time. The Powers That Be, in their infinite wisdom, have now decreed that we need to be on DST more than we're off it and I find that making the adjustment is a lot harder now, despite preferring true time, than it was in past years. Moving back when the days are already on their way to being so short is an extremely stupid move, IMHO.

It allowed me to function during the winter months.

If you cannot buy one, bundle up and get outside and get 20 minutes in the sun

every day, many people have found this makes a huge difference also.

Hi y'all....new here! Love reading all your posts!

OK- SAD. A couple of thoughts:

- I'm a huge proponent of Vitamin D. Looking at PubMed under " vitamin d " you'll

see all the diseases associated with low D. I personally think it's a huge part

of SAD. I too love Vitamin D Council and feel if there is concern with

overdosing (I'm not concerned) to have the testing done. He offers it for $60 or

so.

- I've heard that Yellow Dock is a great remedy for SAD.

- Make sure you're on plenty of omega 3's like fish or flaxseed oil. It is so

necessary for the brain to function.

- I've heard to get out and walk in the early a.m. when it's light.

- Wouldn't exercise help a lot too?

Just some thoughts! Hope you find some relief!! I know I don't like it getting

dark early and bare trees and all! :)
