I've posted a message to the GFCF noticeboard and am doing same here.

We've been on the enzymes for two weeks and have been challenging with

phenols. There is much improvement - previously we would have had major

behaviours/stimming, it's not totally " right " but better. I'm

encouraged....keep up the good work Devin, and many t hanks.

We're using both enzymes Petizyde and Zyme Prime. Devin thought that the

Zyme Prime might be helpful to address phenols.

We have never had any bowel problems, only behaviours as a reaction to

phenols/salicylates - more on edge, higher anxiety, increased stimming etc.

We tested orange juice, apples, strawberries and bananas.

n,

I am looking into the phenol thing myself. Which phenol items did you

challenge with? Is there a particular behavior to look for -

hyperactivity, crabbiness, bowels? Which enzymes are you giving?

Question:

Does anyone have a list of foods that are high in phenols? I have seen this

term mentioned often on this list but have no idea which foods these are.

Thanks.

Joan

Super advice from Dana. I needed to add that my son takes one

Peptizyde and one HN-Zyme Prime with each meal and snack. I am

doubling the dose whenever he has a larger amount of phenols because

phenols have been such a problem for him and I also double the dose

if I have any doubts at all about whether or not I've given enough to

cover a meal in general. I open the capsules and mix the enzymes in

a little Kool-Aid (I believe it has gluten) or juice and give it just

before the meal.

The phenol list names the only things my son will eat. I need a

list of food that is safe to eat. Any suggestions?

These foods are " safe " to eat if your son does not have a problem

processing phenols. Do you see any of the indicators that I have

included on my site? If you do, you can either remove the high

phenol foods, or try one of the suggestions I have indicated there to

help your child process them.

I'm a little confused about one thing on your website. My son is

currently taking Thera Nu Condensed, which contains P5P - I open the

capsule and put it in his morning milk. Your web page states that it

can't be taken unless it is enterically coated b/c it will be broken

down before it reaches the small intestines. Is this true, or did I

misunderstand?

My little guy does seem to have some phenol intolerance symptoms.

And some have just started recently (laughing & night waking). He has

been on the vitamin for about 2 weeks or so. He eats massive amounts

of red raspberries, which we grow in the backyard and he picks

himself, likes chocolate, peanut butter and on and on. Sounds like

he may have a problem w/phenols. Do you think I should stop the

vitamins for a while??

Thanks for your help!

Becky

I read that statement exactly the same way you did, but that statement

is taken from another source, which is cited just below the statement.

I do not personally know much about P5P, or whether the P5P can be

enterically coated within the capsule [so therefore if you break it

open it would still be okay]. Hopefully a more scientific person can

answer that question for you. But what I do know, is that children

with phenol issues also occasionally have their issues worsen if they

are taking a vitamin or other supplement containing P5P. So if your

child has phenol issues, and removing offending foods or trying some

of the ideas indicated on my site do not seem to help him, you can

consider stopping the supplement containing P5P and see if that helps.

Otherwise, I don't see that taking the P5P without enteric coating is

a problem, just wasteful I guess, because your child's body will be

digesting it before it gets to the intestine where it would be

absorbed. But if someone with more scientific knowledge says

something different than what I just did, then you should probably

believe that person and not me LOL

If your son has been eating raspberries, chocolate, and peanut butter

up until now with no problems, but just in the last 2 weeks you have

started the vitamin with P5P and just recently he has begun laughing

and night waking, then I do think you should stop that vitamin and see

if the laughing and night waking do go away. There are other vitamin

supplements out there that you can try. Nu Thera is sold by Kirkman,

and I do know Kirkman has another regular multi-vitamin called

Everyday I think, that you can ask them if it contains P5P or anything

else you might be concerned about.
