Guest guest
Just FYI for anyone not sure if the enzymes truly work. My son has been gfcf for 1 year. Recently I ordered Peptizyde and have used it judiciously the past few weeks. I have used it only when I allow a minor infraction such a cookie being passed out at school, one time so he could have normal chicken nuggets, and also to have taco bell tacos (no cheese) there is wheat in the meat. He did perfectly fine each time. I was wondering if his gut had healed so much he could handle the infractions without enzymes. I didn't want to try though. I knew eventually too many infractions would lead us back to our original condition. Well over the week-end his class had a campout at his school with the principal. Of course I gave him is enzymes in his pocket and told the adults there. He did not take the enzymes on his own and I was upset that the adults didn't check with thim. Up to this point they have supported us fully on the diet and have seen the great improvment. Anyway he came home with next day and was quite grumpy, his eyes glazed a bit, and was very non-social. I finally got out of him he had eaten a s'more for a snack without an enzyme and had 2 donuts without an enzyme. He was a mess. Obviously, the enzymes work great and he needs them because without them there is no doubt he was slipping back into the fog. Fortunately by the evening he was much better. I still struggle with wanting to let him eat more non gfcf foods with the enzymes. I need to know they are getting all the proteins broken down. I want to let him eat more foods like many of you and just give the enzymes and not worry about it. But, after being intensely gfcf for a year I don't want to lose ground. I will say the effect of letting him be one of the kids for special treats or an occasional party has been great on his psyche. I plan to order the other enzyme and try that too. I also want to urge parents who are struggling with the idea of being less restrictive with the diet: Do be cautious. Though I am confident that enzymes, especially the ones I'm " familiar " with, can help greatly with allowing the diet to be less restrictive, it isn't something to be taken lightly. So, 's concerns are normal, we don't want to risk losing ground.

That is how you started the GFCF diet to being with, right? And everything else that pertains to your child. That is parent's job. No one wants any lost ground for anyone. Using enzymes with any restrictive diet is not an either/or situation. That's the great part about it. And being comfortable with anything you give your child is important. It seems to me that even if you want to just use it for " planned infractions " that would bring a tremendous amount of relief for a lot of families. Just going out to eat and not worrying what they are REALLY doing in the kitchen, or your child being able to participate in a party with out the food being a major deal is worth quite a bit. My kids are school age and eating with their friends in the cafeteria was a major point of discussion (kids who bring lunches sit in a different section from hot lunches). My kids take an enzyme in their pocket whenever they leave the house, in case they are at a neighbors and drinks or snacks are offered. And yes, we had some screw-ups in the beginning. But we were having some screw-ups with the diet anyway. Just wanted to let you know you won't get any pressure one way or another on this board. It is strictly an option. Keep us posted. .
