I know that happens with the RVAD occassionally, but you just push through and wait for the casting to do it's work. Anyways, he's doing awesome. How is he adjusting to this new cast? Take care. I know there is some question as to whether the RVAD is as important once you start the casting process. His back looks fabulous, but there is still a hump on his ribs and he still kind of goes to one side when out of the cast. I had an -ectomy Jan. 11th of 2008. there are about a dozen or so of us here and you'll do well to go back and read some of our posts to get a good idea of what you are going to be dealing with. In the search box, try esophagectomy, -ectomy, Isabella, in Thunder Bay, in NY, in NC, from Ky, Sandy in Va. in GA. Most of us have had the surgery done in our 30's (I was 39) but a couple of 40's and 50's. You're also in good company with Rich in Mi. who is scheduled next week and Tim in the UK who is scheduled in May. The MOST IMPORTANT THING - how many of these surgeries has the surgeon done, which procedure (transhiatal, Ivor-, Thoracic, combination of) do they use and why. You may want to take some time now and find a surgeon who has done at least 100 and at least several for achalasia (A) patients. The procedure itself is not all that uncommon but the VAST majority are for much older cancer patients. Basically, you need this to work for you for say, 60 years. One thing that many of us have done and found helpful is to send records to some of the leading surgeons in the country. Try Dr. Rice at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Luketich at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center - my surgeon - his assistant is Aimee McBroom mcbrooma at UPMC.edu and Dr. Marco Patti at the University of Chicago (I think, someone else should be able to give you some contact info). They will often personally call you to give you 2nd opinions and discuss options with you. I found it very helpful in making my decision to travel 10 hours to Dr. Luketich. As I'm sure has dawned on you, we are rare and this is not exactly getting your appendix removed. Find the absolutely most experienced person you can. You may have to travel, fight your insurance company and spend more money (been there, done that) but it's so worth it in the long run. You have been the unfortunate victim of bad diagnoses and ineffective surgeries, you need the BEST now. Do some research and let us know what other questions you may have. There is a wealth of info here and being a member here made my experience so much better. Sorry you're here but We're here to help. Let's get you fixed up!!
