I adore my surgeon just as much who gave me back my quality of life, but it wasn't Dr. Rice. It is possible the person who had negative things to say about him didn't feel welcome to say them here. Dr. Rice is almost always spoken of very respectfully here, but problems can happen, and likely there could have been issues and a patient may not be happy with him. They should feel okay to post here also, in the open and say something like, 'yes everyone likes this doctor, but I didn't because of: ' That person could have been out in the open, maybe started a thread about why they didn't like a certain surgeon, and let everyone decide for themselves. To be honest I've heard of some negatives about almost every surgeon mentioned here, but you have to go back a long way to find them. I can somewhat understand why that person went privately to send a message. They may care a great deal and sincerely want to help and didn't want to be confronted for negative comments about a favorite surgeon. I don't know what was said or what the intent was but if I was new here, I'd like to hear the good and the bad about surgeons. I'm sure all surgeons have some bad that could be told. I know many of you love Dr. Rice or YOUR surgeon, but since we aren't experts and they disagree among themselves with a whole lot more expertise than most of us have, I think we have to be careful saying a certain surgeon is "THE ONE TO GO TO. Anyone else just isn't qualified." There are a lot of us that are eating and doing really well that were treated by others. If we were in the medical field and said something like, this is the ONE to go to and there were problems, we could be sued for not disclosing any negative issues. I'm in an industry that has to be careful to give a short list of recommended vendors, let the client decide and also support them in their decision if they go outside the list. If you oversell a vendor, you can be held responsible. And you know in business, eventually things will go wrong. And plese don't take this as a downing of Dr. Rice or anyone who recommends him. Just from the other side, of becoming overly involved, I can somewhat understand why someone MAY have felt compelled to send a private message. And Dear , I'm sorry you went through this, it would have been better if you had been informed earlier of this person's dissatisfaction (assuming it is someone who was treated by him) so you could make a more fully informed decision. Likely it would have been the same decision, but you would have weighed it against all the other information you have. What I'd love to see is a feedback system here, similar to what Ebay has about doctors and hospitals... and you could rate them on success, office personnel, cost, bedside manner and leave your name and update as you wish. Wouldn't that be a great way to learn about doctors? Guest guest Posted July 5, 2011 Report Share Posted July 5, 2011 We used Dr. Holzman as our surgeon at Vanderbilt in Nashville. He was amazing. I found his email thru the hospital and emailed him directly. He was able to schedule testing with Dr. Vaizi right away who when I called had a four month waiting list. It took one day of testing and meeting with doctors. Then a week later we drove back to the hospital and had surgery at 4pm on a Friday and drive home the next morning. It is usually same day surgery with him but he knew we lived in Memphis and let us use a recovery room to stay in over night. I would recommend him and he has done at least 100 myotomies. If I have already had those and Achalasia is confirmed will I have to do it again? Also, I was told that it may be 2 or 3 days in the hospital, so that they can monitor and make sure all is well..but a day would be great. When did you have your surgery done?
