I have nutcracker esophagus! The first form oftreatment they offered me was Viagra of all things(I am female).Myinsurance doesn't cover it and I can't afford it. The they startedrunning down a list of drugs they would like to try the first few wereones that I am allergic to and most of the others are ones that havealready been tried. They finally settled on Nexium twice a day(I'vealready tried this but took it once a day)the other one isbethananechol. That's all they are willing to do at this point. Idon't believe that this is going to help much. My local GI Dr.sent meup there because the meds didn't work and we were hoping for a moreaggressive approach. Well guess I'll give it a try. If there is anyoneinvolved with this group that lives in FL and has found a Dr willingto get a little more aggressive please either post it here or e-mailme at fence80506mypacks (DOT) net.Blessed Be,Janine 4-H Leader extraordinaire! Guest guest
Janine, I'm so glad to hear that you've finally gotten a diagnosis! Take the time to research as much as you can about nutcracker (for instance, I think I remember reading that surgery doesn't work so well for it). Do you know about www.pubmed.gov, which links you to medical journal articles? Enter the subject (or even a doctor's name) in their search field and you'll get related articles. Just watch to see the date, so that you know you're getting the latest info. I learned last year (through a link from another member of the group) that Viagra is the best smooth muscle relaxer around (the lower half of your E has smooth muscle - meaning not under voluntary control). My husband, with DES, was told by our local gastro. this summer that they are starting to research Cialis, which would give you longer lasting effects. He wasn't prescribed it, however, because his doc said it's still in the testing stages. Right now, he takes Nifedical XL (long-acting Nifedipine, another smooth muscle relaxer). Also, you should probably check to see if there's a way to appeal the insurance company's not covering the drug. Good luck! in Michigan > > I haven't posted for quite some time. Guest guest
Try going to Google and type in Viarga + nutcracker esophagus. You will find this article and others: This will explain to you why they prescribed for you viagra. Viagra Facts Please note this from this article: Sildenafil can inhibit PDE5 present in esophageal smooth muscle, lung tissue, and brain tissue. Inhibition of PDE5 in lung tissue results in pulmonary vasodilation which can be effective in treating pulmonary hypertension. Inhibition of PDE5 present in esophageal smooth muscle can cause a marked inhibition of esophageal motility as well as a reduction in lower esophageal sphincter (LES) tone. These effects may be beneficial in certain motor disorders involving the esophagus such as diffuse spasm, nutcracker esophagus, and hypertensive LES. However, the reduction in LES tone can worsen the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).[3556] Sildenafil has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and inhibit PDE5 in cerebral blood vessels. The areas of the brain that have the highest activity of PDE5 are the hippocampus, cerebral cortex, and basal ganglia. Although clinical studies have not proven this effect, inhibition of PDE5 by sildenafil in the brain may result in emotional, neurological, and psychological effects (see Adverse Reactions). Two doctors in Florida who have previously been mentioned on this board are Dr. at Mayo in ville and Dr. Rosemurry in Tampa. C. , M.D., new chair of Surgery, Mayo Clinic, ville, Fla. Tampa General Hospital Hope this will be of some help to you. Maggie See AOL's top rated recipes and easy ways to stay in shape for winter.
