Guest guest
Dawn, I do not remember having any neck pain. I was actually eating tacos after 4 days. The wounds were always a worry for me, but I was good to go after a couple of weeks. I think I had my first bber 3 weeks after. I missed it as well. Guest guest
Hi Dawn, The neck and shoulder pain may be a result of having laparoscopic surgery. Personally I think he is best to stick to soft foods anyway and take his time getting back onto a 'normal' diet. Better to go gently at this stage. Good luck. Guest guest
Dear Dawn, I agree with Deb about the diet. I honestly think that two weeks to a normal diet is far too optimistic and will only end up with him worrying why he cannot manage to achieve that. I cannot help with the symptoms but I can pass on my experience with diet which was to make the decision to stick to a completely soft diet for five weeks then gradually introduce more solid items. This worked for me brilliantly and was worth the patient wait. Guest guest
Hi Dawn I agree with most of the others. Each person is different. I stayed on a soft diet for at least 4 weeks and then tried harder foods. I ate mostly chicken, fish, soup, mashed squash and potatoes. I lost 10 lbs my first 3 weeks home. I'm 6 weeks post op and am just comfortable with eating most foods. I had an open heller. I had a hot dog last week and that night ended up with spasms. I had chili two days ago, and same thing, a got reflux and pain. Too much acid in the tomatoes. It's pretty much trial and error. As for the lump. When my son was younger he has surgery on his sinuses and the surgeon told me that what you can do is massage the incision if possible and it will minimize any lumps. Don't know if that applies to your husband but it's a thought. I get the shoulder pain sometimes, but not the neck. I hope this helps. I wish your husband a speedy recovery. I'm sure he'll be drinking beer soon. All the best dawnbwillis <dawn0916@...> wrote: I'm interested to hear about the symptoms people have after a Heller lap myotomy. Guest guest
I just had a lap heller redo and I did have a bit of a lump under the largest incision above the bellybutton. I emailed my surgeon about it and he said to use heat compresses and it would go away in a few weeks. I was eating solid foods after a few days as my surgeon said to. There is still some swelling so the eating is not perfect, but he only had me on soft foods for a day or two post op. I also had some pain in my left should and up into my neck. Some people on here have said it is the air that is pumped into the stomach during surgery. I asked my surgeon and he said it had to do with my diaphram being disturbed during the surgery (cause it is so close to the stomach and I think some of my stomach was stuck to it). Maybe it's a bit of both. Dayna > > I'm interested to hear about the symptoms people have after a Heller > lap myotomy. Guest guest
Dawn: I also had the intense shoulder pain and sometimes in the stomach. My do said it was also from the diaphragm due to the nerves deferring the pain. I have had stomach issues and food isn't staying well for long. I am still on a soft diet but doc said broiled fish, tuna fish, potatoes, etc. Still haven't really tried any veggies b/c of fiber. So far everything has gone pretty well. Just introduce things little by little. Doc said no pineapple or shrimp - but can't get him to respond to tell me if it is just over recovery or forever. Hope only recovery. I am almost 4 weeks post. Just going back to work tomorrow - my energy level is very low, had trouble with pain meds. Think if that wouldn't have happened would be better. Good luck with everything. Guest guest
I had neck and shoulder pain for quite a while after surgery. It is partially from the surgery itself because believe it or not when they pump you full of air that can stay in your system for a very long time. To this day though occasionally I get pain in the neck and left shoulder. After many trips to the hospital thinking I was having a heart attack, I finally realized there are some nerves which run in that region and I believe somehow spasms of the esophagus can cause the other pain. I know it sounds kind of crazy, but it is my best guess at this point given other people I have talked to. Hope this helps, Rob Re: Post-op symptoms Dear Dawn, I agree with Deb about the diet.
