BS for "Barium Swallow." Since you are coming here for advice, I would like to offer you some. It sounds like you are doing great. As you said you are managing the condition yourself "with no medical or surgical intervention."

However, how well are you monitoring your condition? Are you aware that it can get seriously worse without your knowing about it (that's right!) or without feeling any different for quite a while. You may want to check back on some of my posts or 's (from NY) to learn more about that. Now I am not suggesting that you should panic and run to the first GI doc and demand a barium. What I am suggesting to you is that you be aware that this condition can worsen (without your being aware of it)and a barium swallow would give you most of the information you would need. Most people here do it without blinking. There is little to no downside to it, and you may learn a lot about yourself however the results turn out. It is always better to be informed; keeping your head in the sand is not allowed here.

Hi Donna,

To be honest I didn't even know such test exists! And to be honest again: I thought of such test myself to ask for if a doctor ever doubts me again. I find it a pretty good way to see what's going on inside. As I had my last barium test in I think March my radiologist showed me his work afterwards. I then told him that he didn't do his job right -LOL-. I thought some extra pictures furtherdown needed to be taken. He finally agreed (wasn't leaving the room otherwise -LOL-). When he put me back in front of the machine again, that was minutes and minutes (over 10 I guess) after my last bit of swallowing, we saw the barium standing in my e. He immediately took pictures of that.

So by coincidence I happen to have such picture as well, but not the way you describe it.

As you know I am from Holland, so it's an uncommon test over here. As for Germany: neither in Germany I have ever heard of this test being done.

Am I the only one who's doctor ordered this test as a final diagnostic?I hear mentions of barium tests (didn't get one), endoscopy (had itwith no sedation - never again) and manometry - not that bad comparedwith endoscopy. But never a GI transit. Maybe because it's too expensive for theAmerican insurance companies to pay??? My surgeon will order thisagain after the surgery and for follow up, apparently (I'm in Canada).Hmmmmm
