Hi. It is best to have the motility test without sedation because the E and LES would be affected by the sedation. Although I have heard several on here say that they were sedated. I would be interested in the results with and without. It is not a pleasant thing to do but between it and the the barium - those are the tests that confirm A.

Is this the test where the put a tube up your nose and down the

back of your throat and monitor pressures as they withdraw the tube while

having small drinks?

Yes, yuck! :( LoL but that was the one test that really showed what was going on. So as uncomfortable as it is it was my life saver the day before that test was the day the nuerologist tried to tell me my problem was an eating disorder.Blessed Be,Janine Re: motility test

Thats the test I am waiting for although my Consultant put me

down for the follow up 6 weeks after the barium swallow which I had about 4 ½ weeks

back so it may be he isn’t waiting for that test. I had the initial endoscopy

and barium at my local hospital but got to travel to another one for this test.

I had this test done for the second time last month to try and find out if I

was having E spasms. They made me drink icce water and then hot water. Then eat

pudding. Then I had to set up and do it all over.It took quite awhile and I was

glad when it was done. They told me that I definitely don't have spasms and it

looks like it must be angina pains.

throat) and the sniff the ky jelly thing.. it would not go through my soft

palate. They were very kind and all but i am telling you ( i had 2 kids lamaze

too) it feels like they are putting out an eye! but i have to go back this

tuesday am and they are going to have to put me to sleep to get it in, then wake

me up and do it.. oh well....kim ellen bailey

I don't believe for a second you are having " Angina " pains. If you have

achalasia and you are having these pains in the center of your chest (heart

problems ruled out) they are probably 99.9% surely spasms. When I had my

motility test done they also could not cause me to have spasms no matter what

was tried. I even asked the Dr. " If my motility is " 0 " and I have NO motility

at all then how can my esophagus be going into spasms? " He was the head Dr. at

a huge teaching hospital and he stood there scratching his head. The pain would

even go up into my jaw at times. Still does. From what I have learned it is

not only esophagus spasms but spasms in the chest wall. When they are bad I use

my stadol nose spray and it takes the pain away in a minute. Just have to be in

a place where I can relax. Hope this helps. Joann

Eating those things are what we take to stop spasms, often. I couldn't make a

spasm start if I tried. I wouldn't necessarily rule out angina pain, but as far

as testing if you have esophageal spasms I think your money was wasted, but that

is just my opinion. Those things aren't known to cause spasms, at least from

stories here and not in my experience. I think some doctor is just tucking some

money in their purse and getting a pat on the back for using up some tests and

adding some cash flow to the hospital. But I'm feeling cynical today.

The spasms usually taper off after surgery. Of course you should look at other

sources of the pain, but I wouldn't eliminate plain old achalasia spasms.

Thanks for posting that. I keep telling people that just because we have

achalasia it does not mean all our chest pains are spasms. They could in

fact be heart pains for some. Someone could even have both. There are

also many other possible causes, such as gall stones.

About the test, was it read by someone that is an expert in achalasia

and spasms? Was it done on the old style equipment or on a high

resolution manometry device? Did you have the " spasm " pain during the

test? All the equipment can do is tell you that you didn't have an

esophageal spasm during the test. If you had it with the old style

equipment it may only tell you that you didn't have one in the lower

esophagus.

Sometimes achalasia causes other Non-Cardiac Chest Pains (NCCPs) I doubt

that one can know without a test if the pain is a true spasm or another

type of achalasia NCCP. The pain could be caused by damaged nerves.

Having the heart checked sounds good to me, but it may not be the end of

the story.
