Guest guest
In reference to your comment: It is also pervasively written in all the medical research reports that extreme weight loss and anorexia are key symptoms/results of the illness. Peg, this statement is correct. But a 200 lb woman who loses 50 lbs in a two/three month period is extreme weight loss. If you are at a normal weight when you start regurging your food and don't get proper treatment right away then you would become anorexia. A doctor should, and I think probably most doctors who understand Achalasia do, look at whether we are maintaining our weight. Maggie AlabamaSee what's free at AOL.com. Guest guest
, Just read the discussion with your weight story and I have to ask - did your surgeon tell you to lose weight before the surgery? And what effect has the weight had on the myotomy? Dr. Rosemurgy told me that I had to get to 170 before he would operate on me (190 at the visit). While that would be hard, it would be possible for just a moment in time, but then he said I would have to maintain my weight below 170 for LIFE. I have maintained my weight from (185-195 - height 5'3 " ) for the past 4 years but always overweight. Achalasia has been misdiagnosed as GERD for over 20 years (but did not become severely constricted until 2 years ago). He said that I was probably " eating around the disease " - but I don't think I am, really. I do eat pretty much oatmeal, frozen yogurt and soups but only about 1400-1600 calories a day. I am really depressed because I don't think that I can meet his criteria. And the flip side is that if I lose the weight just to get the surgery, will gaining it back cause problems (rupture, severe GERD etc). I am an apple shaped girl not a pear shape but only a size 16. Thanks to everyone for bringing up this subject - I thought I was the only fat achalasian. Guest guest
Hi , Happy birthday, 34 is a great age! I liked Dr. Rice. He was very professional and very thorough. It just seems like everything is going so fast. I saw him on May 4th and I already have all my tests scheduled, my pre-op appointment and my surgery scheduled. Fortunately, I only need a myotomy, how has it been with the E? What did you think of Dr. Rice? Guest guest
I'm sure it's because we eat high calorie foods. We think - hope - pray that having A will make us lose weight but then we continue to make bad choices about diet & exercise. At least I do!!! LOL Take care and good luck with your surgery. Guest guest
Hey - I asked my doctor if this was going to make my stomach any smaller and he said 10%. (I should've negotiated for 50% LOL) anyway maybe that explains your loss of appetite. Guest guest
Good morning to you all, I have read all your messages on weight. I am 42yr young and weigh eleven stone which I think is around 170lb, I was diagnosed with achalasia in 1995, which happened just after the death of my father. My first experience of having difficulty in swallowing was at the age of 14yr. As a boy I would eat loads and drink milk, a pint of with all meals. I was always generously proportioned as a young man, and at the age of 22 maintained the weight of 13.5 stone and nearly topping 14 stone. I had huge problems in 1995, and lost weight quickly in no time at all I was 10.5 stone. I joined a gym and got myself fit and gained weight to what I am now 11 stone. The more weight you carry the more problems you will have in swallowing, and the attacks are more severe. I eat at this time pretty much what I like but will confess to you that I do regurgitate often. I would say all in all I manage the condition very well. I was asked to have the Hellier myotomy and nissan fundaplication back in 1995 but declined. I am glad I have as I feel the success is not that good after a 5 hour operation together with any other treatments like dilatation. I would suggest to others reduce weight drink plenty of liquid with all meals and be positive and in control. i would like to speak to others who have had the surgery 5 years post op. I hope to speak to as many of you as possible in the future. Take care all. Guest guest
Hi Marie, I find dealing with my weight very confusing. Eating and your needs are also highly influenced by your brain. Before I had Achalasia I weighed about 220 pounds. I had to watch my diet and could/should not eat high calory food. Then, due to the Achalasia, my weight dropped to 139 pounds in 18 months. By that time I could hardly keep any food inside and my diet consisted of cream, chips in lots of mayonnaise and chocolate (which I melted in my mouth). I also ate baby food, but then spiced up with lots of ketchup and cheese. Looking back, I am glad I had the extra pounds, as they made me last as long as I did! After my surgery eating has improved considerably, but I don't want to gain all of my weight back. BUT, some of my symptoms are coming back, which makes me wonder if I should create another buffer for when I will have difficulty eating again. Confusing, confusing, confusing. Also for my brain, which is still asking for chocolate. I currently weigh 145 pounds and have decided to ask for help from a dietitian. She can now help me find food that gives me energy, but not gives me all the extra poungs back. And should my condition get worse, help me find food which will give me energy and keeps me from loosing weight. I have four different wardrobes in my cupboards and would like to get rid of some! Our weights will probably always remain an issue... I always thought that someone suffering with this condition would be rake thin , but not so. Im hoping that I can sort myself out now that my last dilitation (last week ) seems to have worked , Maybe I can deal with it better now that Im eating a lot better and so I can control it more , Ive actually had some silly people saying to me ...oh I wish I couldn't swallow and maybe I could get some of this weight off... unbelievable .. I still don't eat much about 1650 cals a day and i have a very active job. its driving me nuts. Re: Re: Achalasia, Weight issues Hi donna, Just saw this post re weight. I will give me history with weight. I have weight issues, but with gaining it and not losing. Before diagnosis I weighed 235 lbs. Once I got sick, (20 years ago) I went to 159 lbs in 2 months. Because I was heavy to begin with nobody paid attention, then finally someone did and I got my diagnosis. I couldn't even swallow water. Then I had my 1st dilitation and I was so glas I could swallow that I put all the weight back on. I have been heavy every since. Only losing 11 to 20 lbs before getting dilitated again. Now with the myotomy, I was 255 when I entered hospital, 258 when I came home, and am now 253. Even after only having liquids for a week in hospital I gained, go figure. I think the weight will come off for me this time because I'm finding I don't really want to eat that much and if I do my stomach hurts. That's probably from the partial fundoplication. I know it's only been two weeks, but my brain really is not friendly with food right now. I eat because I have to, not because I want to.I use a small bread and butter plate as my dinner plae. I'm sticking with fish, chicken and soft veggies and foods. I think I'm afraid to try anything other than that. Tha'ts okay because I will lose because I want to not because my body is rejecting it.I find that most foods are going down 95% with a little patience. I put my fork down between each bite and that helps. One snack food I found, (but not healthy) is Cheese Puffs or Cheesies or Cheetos. Whatever anyone might call them. They are crunchy and melt in your mouth. No problem swallowing. I have to cut back as I eat too many of those lol. I find it very strange to have A and have a weight problem. Is anyone else out there like me? I think it is because food would go down, but take forever to go through to stomach and I would always feel hungry. I will be so glad when I can al least get on my treadmill so I can add some exercise to my regime. Just thought I would ad to your post Donna. I am feeling much better, but the side I have in incicsion on is still painful. Must be the muscle as they went in on my left side in the back, just below the shoulder blade. The did this because of the weight I carry on my stomach. Less risk of error. Well everyone, have a great day and hope you have much success in swallowing. Guest guest
Hi , I'm new to this site but when I read your post I had to respond. I was diagnosed in March of this year after going to the hospital with an elective surgery to remove part of my thyroid because of it getting bigger and my gaining a bunch of weight. In 1998 (when i think i first realized something was wrong and didn't do anything about it) I weighed more than 220lbs. and in that year I ended up weighing120 lbs. Mostly from not being able to keep anything down. I'd eat something and it would immediately come right back up. i thought it was great because i was finally skinny after years of being big. But since 2005 i was having more trouble swallowing and gained back all the weight. Thought it was my thyroid and was going to have it taken care of, but of course went in for surgery and ended up in the ICU because of aspirating. (had aspirated before back in 2001 when i had surgery but they thought i just ate before surgery) but this time ended up in the hosp. for a week before they finally knew what was wrong with me. That whole time i was there i was only given clear liquids and lost only 5 pounds. Since being home Ive gained that weight back and then some. I thought i was the only one who could actually gain weight with achalasia, but i read what you wrote and wanted to let you know that you're not the only one. I'm scheduled for a laparoscopic Heller with partial fundo in august, I can eat now. but i don't follow any sort of diet except for what I've taught myself (staying away from icy cold drinks and not eating a lot of meat) i still have some pains once in awhile, and swallowing is difficult if i don't drink a lot of water to force food down. and sometimes it feels like a heavy weight in my chest to where its hard to breathe but I've been living with this for awhile and have learned to eat slowly, chew chew chew and take it a step ( or swallow) at a time. Whew! I'm glad i finally got up the courage to write. Just wanted to let you guys know thanks for having this site because i thought i was alone. Guest guest
Hi , thank you so much for your response. Just so you know, since I've come home I've been able to lose weight. I am keeping foods down, but I'm finding that I don't want to eat as much. I keep a small plate an that's what I use. So far so good. I eat mostly mushed veggies, fish and chicken. My breakfast is usually oatmeal. I gained weight also in hospital when only on fluids for a week, I think that's because they have the IV going. I think overall, we just have to concentrate on being happy and healthy and if the weight comes off, good. If not, you're health and can eat. Good luck with your myotomy and if you need to talk don't be afraid, we are all friends. I know I was a nervous wreck leading up to my surgery and this site was an amazing source of support. So you take care and keep us update. kristin flamenco <krlofl@...> wrote: Hi , I'm new to this site but when I read your post I had to respond. Guest guest
Oh my goodness having just read this i now feel like (and I know everyone always says this on this site!) soemone actually understands!! and i kindof know what to expect. Guest guest
Hi Gwenan, I am sorry to hear about your weight issues, but know so much how it feels. That is so wonderful about this group. Even though we all have our different symptoms and reactions, there are always some people who have the same issue you (and this case I) have. We tend to just look at and post about physical symptoms, but Achalasia also has an enormous effect on our emotions and behaviour. And it helps me a lot to share some of these issues and feel other have them too. I too was happy shrinking. I lost a third of my body weight and people wanted to know about my miracle diet! I then mostly tell them what is the cause and that the weight loss was the only good things about it. Of course the fat cells are still there and very hungry - they have their mouths wide open LOL! The body is still in "emergency mode" so still eager to create a buffer for the bad times to come. I too have some issues eating again (burps, the feeling it is still hanging there and regurgitation), which makes me wonder how long I still can enjoy eating. So, whenever I have a good day and eating goes well, I tend to stuff myself with the thought "while I still can". Which I regret shortly after. I did get rid of the XXL sized clothes recently, but am still hanging on to the rest. I am going to see a dietitian to help me with my diet. First I had to stay away from the fat and sweet food, then I HAD to eat them to stop me from loosing weight and now I have to avoid them again. Aaaaargh!!! Although I find it frustrating, I do try to enjoy eating and life! Unfortunately, we live in a time where appearance is very important, but our loved ones will still love us if we would gain back some (or more) extra pounds! Good luck and thanks for sharing with us! After having your myotomy, are you swallowing at 100%, 80%, or????How long have you had achalasia, how much weight did you lose intotal, and do you think you had a "normal" relationship with foodbeforehand?I don't know why I'm so curious about other people's experience.. .justseeking some understanding, I suppose. I know the phrase "your mileage may vary" always comes to mine whenthinking of A - everyone is so different - anyway it helps just to beable to think out loud, so to speak, and talk about it.Take care,Donna> >> > I'm writing this because I'm wondering if anyone else has this > issue.> > > > I haven't quite got my head wrapped around it yet, but basically > I'm> > scared of gaining weight after my upcoming myotomy. > > > > I was dieting and lost 20 pounds, then A got severe and I lost 20> > more.
