Guest guest
Jaimie, Your body has been traumatized, invaded, if you will. Let's get "basic." Either everything will turn out alright, or it won't. Let's assume the good alternative first. A lot has happened to you. You received heavy duty anesthesia. You had a myotomy; you had a fundoplication...you had a lot done! It takes your body time to recover from this "insult" to your system. There can be swelling in the LES area. This takes time for you to get back to normal. Anesthesia can screw up your sleeping, and also leave you feeling nauseated. The swelling can cause food to come back up. As you said, return to liquids and soft foods for now. Give your body a chance. If it turns out that something did go wrong, which it probably did not, when enough time has gone by to recover you will take the appropriate steps with the surgeon, like Tonia did with . Let's take one step at a time. Forget about those people who go in one day, out the next, and start eating like a normal person again. We are all different. In a message dated 5/28/2007 8:14:43 A.M. Guest guest
Thank you , I'm just afraid that I will have to have it done again and I don't know if I would want to do that. Your are correct, it does take time for swelling to go down. I have to go back to just liquids as soft foods aren't working. Guest guest
I agree with . Your body has been through more than you think and you need to give it time. Don't eat too close to bedtime to avoid foods coming back up. If the nausia doesn't stop after a few months, you may want to speak to your doctor about a medicine that will help your stomach empty faster (I can get you the name of it if you want). For some reason after my myotomy my stomach decided it wasn't going to work right. Even after 12 hours of not eating, there was still food present in it. The doctor believed this was making me feel sick, and he was right. Also, don't be surprised when it comes time to withdrawl from the percocet. That drug is highly addictive. I broke out in sweats and thought I was dying and going crazy. This lead to panic attacks which took me down a horrible road of thinking that everything else in my body had turned against me and everything was shutting down. Turned out to be a very mental thing. I did some self therapy (my wife's suggestion) and I was amazed that it helped a lot. No more visits to the emergency room saying that something was terribly wrong! ;-) Don't get me wrong, that was a long recovery. Anyway, the bottom line is that you are going to go through a lot for a while. Stay in communication with your surgeon and try to relax. Eat soft foods and drink plenty of liquids. As soon as your doctor thinks you are ready, start an acid blocker for your stomach (I'm on Protonix for life). This, I've been told, is necessary due to the fact that the myotomy opens up the chance of stuff from the stomach coming back up easily and damaging the tissue of the esophagus. And, never forget to write on here. I will try to keep in touch to assure you that things will have their ups and downs, but slowly get better. Guest guest
Did they do a barium swallow after, like next day or after to make sure it worked? That test will tell them, if Mayo would have done that I wouldn't have suffered so long, Hopkins did it the am after my surgery! Guest guest
I was able to take a ppi right after surgery they gave me prevacid sublibgual 1 x day, I have to have 2 to 3 x day (not a gpd thing but dr said if I need it then I can do that, need calcium supp though, actually the latest studies show that anyone who takes ppi's needs extra calcium and an annual bone density test to monitor) because the pain can be BAD. Wonder why they don't give you a melt in mouth ppi and some zofran to help with the nausea until you heal some, it sure helped me. Guest guest
, It's still early. Did your doctor do a barium swallow after surgery to make sure everything was okay? If so, I would say go back to the liquid diet. I remember being about 1 week post op and having mashed potatoes get stuck and I had to get them back up. I was in tears thinking, " It didn't WORK! " My very reasonable husband just looked at me and said, " You are going to fast! Take it easy. " So I went back to soup and Ensure and everything was fine. And whine away! We don't care because we've all been there before! (((HUGS))) , FL > > Hi everyone, > > I hate to whine, but I'm feeling like crap. Nauseated, pain, soft > foods coming back up. Guest guest
Hi , I am feeling really sorry for you!!! Don't loose hope, I know it's rough on you, but I also know things do change for the better. Boy have I cried and cried and cried after my surgery... I thought things would never get back to normal again. Then suddenly it took a turn and things DID change. It seems impossible, but it truly does happen. You need to be patient and take things easy (that goes for what you're eating too!!!). If you're not comfortable with the way things are, if you're feeling unsure, contact your doctor. That's what he's there for! Of course your partial wrap can be too tight, sure. But don't you think it's a bit early to make yourself crazy thinking about that one? You've got swellings on the inside! They need time to heal and they push things tight as well. Dear , I hope you can get your mind stop spinning around like it's doing right now. Give yourself a time out by eating baby foods etc. What goes in and doesn't regurgitate doesn't bother you, so gives you rest. I guess that that is the one and only thing you need right now!!! I think you might not be able to sleep due to everything that's going on in your mind right now. I cannot imagine the stairs are the problem which causes you not to sleep. You've been through a lot lately and your mind still hasn't come to rest. That affects a person a lot, don't underestimate it. , take it easy, give yourself and your body a chance. Oh, and please vent and whine as much as you need to!!! Love, Isabellajamiemcrae33 <jamiemcrae33@...> wrote: Hi everyone,I hate to whine, but I'm feeling like crap. Guest guest
Hi everyone, Thanks for your replies. Had a horrible day today. Went to to clinic to get my bandages changed and got really sick, broke out in a cold sweat and almost passed out. Contacted my surgeon and I go see him on Thurs. am. When they removed the bandages, the long verticle incision had green puss comingout of the top where the staple had been and where the chest tube was it had to be cleaned as it had be seaping. I'm trying not to be concerned but this really scared me. I took some gravol with the percocet and it seemed to help a bit. but got up and moved and felt nauseated again. No they did not do a barium swallow after the surgery, only regular chest xrays. I'm assuming that may be the next step. I'm holding on to all of your good thoughts and trying to be positive, but it's really hard. I've moved my bed to the main floor and am not moving for the next 3 days (yeah right). gone back to strictly liquids and we'll see what happens. Thanks again for all your support and prayers. It's so nice to know someone is there for you. I will keep you posted. Have a great night and enjoy the Stanley Cup Playoffs. (I'm Canadian what do you expect lol) I don't really like Ottawa but they are the only Cdn team left. Guest guest
: After my surgery, I had HORRIBLE nausea. After suffering for a couple of days, I called my surgeon's nurse who prescribed an anti- nausea suppository (ick, I know), which worked after a couple of days. Still not sure if it was the anesthesia or the lack of hydration that made me so nauseous, but after the meds started to work on the nausea, I starting drinking quarts and quarts of Gatorade, and felt so much better. Just thought I'd pass that along. > Hi everyone, > > I hate to whine, but I'm feeling like crap. Nauseated, pain, soft > foods coming back up. Guest guest
thank you for your advice, I went and bought gravol and that helped. I go see the surgeon again tomorrow because of the leakage from the incision. I've also cut back on the percocets so that could help too. I do drink lots of fluids as the soft foods just don't want to stay down. Hopefully it is nothing. Thanks again and have a great day franksplace10 <franksplace10@...> wrote: :After my surgery, I had HORRIBLE nausea.
