Pregnancy and Achalasia

I haven't posted on here in ages, Been frantically busy with my two

youngn's.

To the people discussing pregnancy and Achalasia, I had my myotomy surgery

about 2 months before getting pregnant with my first child. Pregnancy

helped with both my pregnancy, due to the increased progesterone levels in

your body during pregnancy, this acts as a smooth muscle relaxant.

According to my specialist, and is not surprising that my symptoms are

much less while I'm carrying. I have also found that while breastfeeding I

am also OK. Breastfeeding makes your body release oxytocin, which is

another relaxant, also used to bring on labour in inductions. I extended

breastfed with both my boys, still going with number two at the moment, he

is nearly 8months. I will continue probably until about a year. My

symptoms come fastly back when I stop. My specialist wants me to have more

endoscopys and barium meals when I've finished breastfeeding this time.

Just to check on scar tissue etc...

I was told that if I did have problems with my swallowing whilst pregnant,

there were a few drugs they could give me to help. So there are some safe

options apparently. Keep drinking plenty of water, and don't eat too late

at night is my advice. Keep to soft foods also, just to help. No point

putting your body to any more harm than needed.

Well I think that is all I can share really. Feel free to ask anything.

Only too happy to help : )

Just a thoughtif Oxytocin has such an effect on achalasia why is it not prescribed? I am assuming because of the side effects? My daughter sailed through her first pregnancy and is doing really well in this pregnancy.Kim Stafford <kim.stafford@...> wrote: I haven't posted on here in ages, Been frantically busy with my two youngn's. Thanks to all who responded. I feel a little better about things. I

am having some sticking, but my stress level is high right now.

(Mother-in-law in hospital with brain tumor-must operate on Tuesday,

she may have a cancerous lymph node as well) not to mention normal

Christmas stress-so I think that this is contributing to minor

symptoms! Grateful for all prayers for my mother in law! And again

thanks to all!

Biljana,

I had Achalasia before and during my second pregnancy. I didn't have

many more A symptoms than usual, but I did have a lot of

complications with the pregnancy. I was underweight when I got

pregnant, and was unable to gain enough weight throughout the

pregnancy(about 15 lbs total). My water broke at 28 weeks, and my

doctor couldn't tell me why. He said it was usually caused by

infection, or inadequate nutrition, and I didn't have an infection.

I was on bed rest in the hospital for five weeks, and my daughter was

born six weeks early. She's healthy now and I'm a lot healthier than

I was then, but my husband and I are very hesitant to think of having

another child.

If you have any trouble with eating while you're pregnant, it might

help to see a nutritionist. My OB referred me to one, and I think it

helped. She gave me a list of healthy ways to get as many calories

as possible(put powdered milk in everything). It's a good idea to

start taking the prenatal vitamins now, before you get pregnant, if

you can swallow those horse pills(I took chewable vitamins). I think

if I had been healthier when I got pregnant, my pregnancy would have

been healthier. I hope your pregnancy goes well. Good luck. :)
