Hi ,

I've just started reading these boards and thought I'd mention

something that helps me with the pain. I carry a banana with me

everywhere I go, and packets of crackers in the glove box. If I feel

the pain starting to come on, I stop everything, sit quietly eating a

banana, and I can usually head it off at the pass. It took me years

to figure this out but it's such a relief. I used to cry and writh in

pain from this and finally have a handle on it. Also, Prilosec

doesn't really help me, but Ranitidine does (not sure of the brand

name). I take 2 a day of the over the counter strength. Keep a banana

by your bed at night, eat one perhaps before going to bed. This helps

me with liquids aspirating in the middle of the night. I have had

achalasia since I was 16 when I had a heller myotomy and still suffer

with it at 42. Good luck. DeeDee

It is with great pleasure that I have found this group. Considering I

have found little pleasure, lately, thanks to Achalasia.

To make a long story short....I started with trouble swallowing solids

then liquids in May 2002, at the age of 39. After several upper

endoscopies, barium swallow and esophageal mynometry testing, I was

diagnosed with Achalasia. I had a Laparoscopic Heller myotomy and

Nissen fundoplication in October 2002 at the Cleveland Clinic by Dr.

Rice ( one night in hospital). I was relieved of symptoms for

only 6 months. I have had 3 pneumatic (balloon) dilations since my

surgery (the last one in 2005). I always know it is time for another

dilation because I lose my appetite (often feeling nauseated just

thinking of eating) and drop 5-10 pounds. Actually, I am going

through one of those phases, now! I was at the Cleve. Clinic just

last week-had another endoscopy, myometry testing and barium swallow.

" Guess what! " , I was told. " You still have Achalasia! " It was kind

of insulting. As if I didn't already know that I will have this

condition all my life. Anyway, I am scheduled for a bougie dilation

next week (different than a balloon dilation, less risk of perforating

my esophagus, I have been told.) My gastroenterologist will be

conferring with my surgeon soon. Have any of you had great success

having a second myotomy, or fundoplication " taken down " , or even an

esophagectomy?

I take Prilosec once a day and I have not had any issues with reflux. My first proceduer was done lapro and the second was done open. One of the reasons that the second operation was done open is it was done by a different doctor. You can read my whole story at my web site. www.achalasia.us. I have family that lives in Youngstown. The Cleveland Clinic is one of the best places to get our disease treated. If you have any other questions or even want to talk about what I have gone through feel free to e-mail or even call if you like. mt4mar@... or 478-971-7474 is my home number. in Georgia joncristino <joncristino@...> wrote: Hello, . I had a nissen 9 years ago. I now need to have the nissen loosened and am

planning on

meeting with surgeons in NYC this Spring for the surgery redo. I have to say

though that 9

years seems to be a pretty good stretch of time compared to some of the other

posts I've

seen and I've never had a dilation or anything. Of course, these days I have to

drink at

least a liter of water per meal!

What my GI told me was that Nissens are not commonly done anymore because they

tend

to be too tight and that the Dor is the wrap of choice these days. I guess the

only benefit

to having the Nissen is that I have never had reflux and have never had to take

anti-reflux

meds. I am not looking forward to adding that to my routine after the redo. I'm

only 31

and a lifetime of Prilosec seems very unappealing to me.

Subject: achalasia

I'm 39 and was diagnosed when i was 30. I have

had dilatations, botox, and myotomy. Now

I'm experiencing sinus tachy-brady syndrome, dizziness, chest pain, and

syncope. My latest

motility study showed non-functional or aperistaltic esophagus. Has anybody had

vaso-vagal

symptoms with there achalasia. I have an appt. with Dr. Kline at usc

and Dr.

DeMeester. Dr. DeMeester performs an esophagectomy by means of laparoscopy. I

have a

feeling that is what I'm going to need to get rid of symptoms. In cases anybody

wonders

heart has been totally checked out and I work for a heart surgeon in the OR so

I'm all to

familiar with the medical aspect of my condition.

Thanks for any help someone can offer

kristi
