Guest guest
asked about experimental treatments. Dr. Jay Pasricha and Dr. Micci at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX are doing preliminary research on stem cell transplantation for achalasia. They may be ready to start human trials in several years. Here's an article about their work: http://www.utmb.edu/utmbmagazine/archive/03_Fall/strands/GI_disorders.htm But that is just a far-off hope for the future. For now, the real options are pneumatic dilation (especially for patients over 40) or surgery. As said, some people have also gotten temporary relief or improvement from acupuncture or other alternative treatments, including Chinese herbal medicine. (Quincia posted an article in Chinese on the website about the specific herbs that are used.) Medications like nifedipine or isosorbide dinitrate may also provide temporary relief. in Lancaster, PA
