Guest guest
Notan , You have explained this very nicely n perfectly ..as usual.... Thanks .. Mukesh Re: Tia update wrote: >... She will have a " heller ?? " >Did not understand the name of surgery. ... The Heller myotomy is named after doctor Heller who developed it. The word myotomy means " cut(otomy) muscle(my). " The Heller myotomy cuts the muscle at the LES (Lower Esophageal Sphincter). The LES is like a valve where the esophagus meets the stomach. It is supposed to open to let food into the stomach and then close to keep food and acid in the stomach. You can read about it here: http://www.nature.com/gimo/contents/pt1/full/gimo53.html There are some good pictures of it here: http://news-info.wustl.edu/tips/2002/medical-health/swallowing_surgury.html The tube that is being cut into is the esophagus. The ring around it is part of the diaphram that the esophagus passes through. The thing at the bottom is the stomach. The myotomy only cuts throgh the muscle layer and not all the way through the wall of the esophagus. This make the muscle weaker so food can pass by it. Sometimes the cut is extended onto the stomach and sometime higher up esophagus. notan
Guest guest
So sorry to hear about your new problem. I wish you well. I have been diagnosed with Achalasia, hiatal hernia and Barrett's esophagus, so I'm really a rare case. Please keep us informed. Anita from Pa. Guest guest
Anita, how are you doing? Have you had an endoscopy recently -- is the Barrett's getting any better? What is your doctor recommending about the hiatal hernia? in Lancaster, PA ----- Original Message ----- > So sorry to hear about your new problem.
