Guest guest
Hi - My son age 13 has A and he was getting spasms really often and they were horribly painful after his surgery. His Dr gave him nifedipine capsules and when he feels one coming on he takes it and knocks them out before they have a chance to start. His were so bad before these pills he would lay in the floor and scream in pain.Thank God now for these because he doesnt go through the pain like before where his other pills didnt work.I hope your Dr can give you something to help relieve your pain. There is a huge post on here about what people do to help with there spasms.I think its under the files section.Try to find that and take a look-lots of things that help others maybe something on there you could try and it may help you as well.Good luck-Tonia > > I had lap surgery on 23rd of June. > > I continued having spasms and so I was put on a higher dose of Buscopan (started 10mg now > 20mg 3 times a day) > > For this past 48 hours I have had a general chest ache, it is worse today with paint also going > to shoulder and throat. > I am going to see doctor tomorrow (as since surgery I now seem to have a huge acne > problem) and I am going to ask him now about this problem but I am not keen for any heavy > medicines hence my question. > Has anybody tried 5-HTP to ease spasms? > Comments please..... >
Guest guest
, I haven't had time to catch up with all the posts so forgive me if someone already mentioned this. Have you read thru the NCCP post yet? Have you tried any/all of the items mentioned in that?If your "spasms" aren't really spasms at all, Buscopan isn't going to help. (and since you continued to have the pains when on the drug, it's possible that you aren't actually experiencing spasms at all) I don't have any experience with the supplement you asked about, but the NCCP post ( go to achalasia/files/ then scroll down until you see Debbi's NCCP Post.doc )and my message yesterday about antidepressants ( achalasia/message/36008?l=1 )might be helpful to you. They're certainly worth discussing with your doctor, at the very least. Debbi in Michigan I had lap surgery on 23rd of June.I continued having spasms and so I was put on a higher dose of Buscopan (started 10mg now 20mg 3 times a day)For this past 48 hours I have had a general chest ache, it is worse today with paint also going to shoulder and throat.I am going to see doctor tomorrow (as since surgery I now seem to have a huge acne problem) and I am going to ask him now about this problem but I am not keen for any heavy medicines hence my question.Has anybody tried 5-HTP to ease spasms?Comments please..... Guest guest
Debbi, Thanks for the reply: > Have you read thru the NCCP post yet? Have you tried any/all of the items mentioned in that? I had tried the hot/cold water, icecream helps but is not always long lasting. > If your " spasms " aren't really spasms at all, Buscopan isn't going to help. (and since you continued to have the pains when on the drug, it's possible that you aren't actually experiencing spasms at all) The Buscopan (usually given for IBS) has stopped me having 99% of spasms (especially now on higher dose) but I believe it is only just holding them back at this intake. Speaking to the doctor he said I could take an extra two tables a day if it was a bad day, but this would then be the maximum dose. It has been SO nice not to have spasms attacks most days and nights as I was. In hindsight I think the constant pains I was suffering was not a spasm but E ache caused by me trying to do some basic/light diy/plumbing so soon after surgery. > I don't have any experience with the supplement you asked about, but the NCCP post ( go to achalasia/files/ then scroll down until you see Debbi's NCCP Post.doc )and my message yesterday about antidepressants ( http:// health./group/achalasia/message/36008?l=1 )might be helpful to you. They're certainly worth discussing with your doctor, at the very least. I was not keen to start taking any mainstream anti-depressants, CCB's etc if there was a more natural/basic choice. It was from the NCCP post that I picked up on the fact " believed to be a function of the medicine's effect on serotonin in the brain " that lead me to 5-HTP as its main function is directed at serotonin and " Promoters of 5-HTP claim that it causes fewer side effects than traditional antidepressants " My partner () is a chiropractor, he has a good understanding of available supplements, and he suggested the 5-HTP as a good place to start with the hope that I can come off of Buscopan. And they will hopefully help with restful sleep and help ease a light bouts of depression that I have had since surgery. In the long term I hope that the spasms will stop, but if they dont I am hoping that I can find some relief in acupuncture ( practices acupuncture but not aimed at the E - he is going to enquire on future training days) - and for now I will try 5-htp.
