Ann, you should have put the do not read as the first line. Not the that would have stopped me though...lol I did not wear a bra on my departure either nor at any other time in my life just to clarify that....lol I would also say to bring something to read or do like cross word puzzles or a game boy. Aslo bring some of your own hygine stuff like soap wash cloth and a towle if possible. Even if you cannot take a bath just a qiuck wash of hte face and a damp whip down of the body will make you feel better.

...still going to read them...lol

Don't expect to be able to wear a bra on your departure. Your highest incision is just below the line of the band and you will not want anything pressing or touching that at that time, believe me. It is only a small wound but a little tender for a couple of days. So take a loose (unfitted) top and loose bottoms to come home - a low-slung skirt or jogging bottoms are suitable - forget the skin-tight jeans !

( - you really don't need to be reading this !!!) LOL

Take lots of underwear - 2 pairs for each day you expect to be in the Hospital.

Take pyjamas . I did not have any, because I wear nighties. The lady in the next bed wore a long dressing-gown and PJs and she got it right. I wore my nighties and knee- length D/gown. My legs were cold and I felt a bit exposed when visitors came ( I was never in bed after the first time).

Whatever, you do, don't forget the lip balm/petroleum jelly for your lips. There will be a period of time when you can have nothing by mouth and you need the balm to stop your lips from drying up and cracking (Yuk). This one applies to the guys as well, obviously.

If I think of any more tips I will pass them onto you, or if you want to ask anything, please feel free to do so. These kinds of snippets of knowledge help me a lot. It's very cute what women are prepared to share with each other. I had some amusing conversations with Jo and others about all this girl stuff.

Ok , this post is ended now (LOL),

Thank you Ann. Very good tips. I'll be sure to remember those when packing for the hospital this weekend. We'll be leaving for Cleveland on Monday for pre-op - surgery on Wednesday. I'll post when I'm back home. Wish me luck!!

Ann,

Thanks for all the useful info! I wouldn't have thought to ask

about some of these things. (I can't really see myself asking Dr.

Patti what bras and underwear I should pack for the surgery.)

I personally haven't noticed any association between swallowing

problems and menstration (but I never thought to look out for that).

I'm gald to hear you weren't nauseous. (I am just worried

because of nausea/vomitting issues after other surgeries due to pain

medication. But at least now, my doctors will be more on notice

this time.)

Take the latest "people" magazine, as the pictures are numerous, you probably wont feel like reading or watching tv.. Take some small slippers you can slide on... Leave your scooby-do slippers at home. ASK for the personal bath wipes, until you get the ok for a shower. Plan your surgery around your cycle!! If you have Dr. Patti, he loves ... ITALIAN Red wine! hmm... living in the wine county, I dont know why he cant like the fine California wines.. You may want to ask ahead if there is a CD or tape machine available to you and books on tape or music is good.. soothing Carolyn... mom to Cameron... I am usually not one to talk about all about the cycle issue, but it

does seem to be key advice to avoid a surgery at that time (if

possible).

So, in case it is helpful, some doctors say it is okay to

occassionally skip your period (but not every month) by the

following if you are taking birth control pills.

1) take three weeks of pills as normal

2) for the fourth week that would usually be your period, start

taking the pills in a new package of pills (by this I mean to skip

the week of iron pills that are often included in a month's supply

of pills and instead go to the next month's supply of pills)

Vicki, slightly red-faced right now

P.S. It is great being able to get advice about such things that a

doctor wouldn't bother or think to suggest to you.

You may be red, but that’s exactly

what I did!!! There was no way I was dealing with that during surgery time or

recovery time after an open myotomy!!

[warning: girl talk ahead] i absolutely echo ann's information

about bras and underwear. i didn't want to wear a bra for about the

first week or two! it just bothered me too much, and was too much

trouble. a note about underwear: if you have any " low rise "

underwear, take that. the incisions are roughly around the belly

button line, so you want to make sure that your underwear goes below

that part and doesn't keep bothering your incisions. i know some

very high cut briefs go to the belly line, and those may be

irritating.

i wore " comfy clothes " at home, basically baggy pajama pants and

loose tank tops, for about two weeks after surgery. i was a little

bloated from the C02 for a few days after surgery, so i could not fit

into my own jeans or anything like that.

also, it would be ideal not to have your monthly period around the

time of surgery, because you really are dealing with enough lack of

energy already. i got mine about 2 weeks after surgery, and that was

fine.

and finally, i tend to get really cold at night, so i asked the

hospital for socks. they gave me these very soft socks with gripper

things on the bottom, so i was able to wear those all the time. i

also took some flip flops with me to the hospital, and wore those

when walking around.

I had things planned out with regard to the monthly and alas, now that I am

approaching

the " pause, " the silly thing went off kilter and I started two days before

surgery -- dealt

with it the whole time I was in the hospital. Nurses and operating room staff

were most

gracious and discreet about it.

Nothing to worry about, but better if it isn't an issue.

My dear ,

If you would like me to wish you luck, then I will - I wish you the very, very best of luck for a good experience and an easy recovery.

But what I really wish for you are a competent and caring Surgeon, the love and support of your family and friends, and a positive attitude.

Very soon you will be over this side of the river with me - the scenery is breathtaking !!

Love from Ann, who will be thinking of you xxxx>> Thank you Ann. Very good tips. I'll be sure to remember those when> packing for the hospital this weekend. Okay girls, thanks for the heads up! I didn't even think about that

with everything else going on i.e. work leave, family to be with me

in cleveland, getting a hotel and so on. So, I will need to make

adjustments as you all said. Will I be able to swallow that small

pill after or the day after surgery? I hope so! That's one visitor

I don't want around for sure!!!

Thanks again,
