Michele, the manometery test is normally done through the nose and depending on what the doctor has ordered it might last only a few minutes to 24 hours. The test is to measure the pressure that is in your E at rest and during swallowing.

Hello everyoneDoes anyone know what a manometry test is? I am scheduled to have one next week and I am freaking out. Is it up the nose or through the mouth? The nurse I talked to said I might have to walk around with it for 24 hours...any info will be appreciated. Thanks!Michele

Michele, Manometry normally goes up the nose, although I have been told it can go through the mouth. Using the nose lessens the gag reflex. You will probably find that some people tolerate the test rather well, while others say it's one of the worst tests to be put through. I have had the test done twice, and from my experience, while it isn't something I'd consider enjoyable, I've certainly had worse. The test usually lasts from 20 to 45 minutes. The two keys are whether a numbing agent is used in the nose - either a gel or a spray (spray is much better!) - and whether the person administering the test has done many of them. I had one done by a GI and one by a nurse. The one by the nurse was much easier. The GI had done very few, while the nurse was kind of a manometry specialist. The coolest thing is if they let you watch the screen during the test, and explain what is

happening. This also helps take your mind off the discomfort. Good Luck!!mike in WI

I had it twice, uncomfortable, but I made it through OK, so don't

worry about your test.

They put a tube up your nose and down your E. You lay on your side

and sip water out of a straw while they measure the muscle action. I

had 0% peristaylisis, thats proboably why I had two, , I guess the

doctor wanted to be sure it was really 0%

I suggest wearing very comfortable clothes and take a pillow or two to

get comfortable. The key to a quicker mammontry is remain as still as

possible during the test. Meditate, think of something pleasant.

For my second test I took a body length pillow, people in the waiting

room looked at me funny, but the test went much better for me than the

1st one.

You'll get through OK.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for responding to my mamometry questions. Now that I am ok

with it, my mamometry test has been cancelled. Today I go for a

scope...I get to go to sleep with this one. I have had this done 2

times and with this doctor it is a piece of cake. I have had A for 21

years and some of my symptoms that I experienced in the past no longer

occur. Ex. I no longer regurgitate in my sleep. Has anyone else

experienced symptoms that have disappeared? Also, does anyone

experience a burning sensation in their E or throat?

I love that I found this site.

Thanks for the info.

Hello!Well, I never want to do that again! The manometry test was not fun....I actually only had about 1/3 of the numbing gel...I told the technician not to give me anymore - it was awful! I'd rather have the pain than that stuff! I was still tasting it all afternoon....YUCK! The rest of the test was ok - not great but bearable.Anyway, all she said was that my LES seemed to be working fine. She didn't say much about the rest of the test....but mentioned she doesn't think I have A. I'm not trying to have A, but I don't know what else all of this could be. How does the disease present itself in the earlier stages? I need to do something to get off this darned Percocet...but the pain is awful - especially when it radiates to my neck/shoulders. I feel like I am really anxious and even a massage doesn't do a whole lot.I don't know if I've mentioned it or not but I do have an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic with Dr. Rice next Thursday. I'm anxious to meet with him. We are also going to meet with my daughter's mito specialist (Dr. Bruce Cohen) while we're up there so it will definitely be worth the trip. 2 hours isn't bad anyway. I really appreciate everyone's advice and expertise. I hope you are all doing well. Hi Kris,

I am really glad to read that you are going to see Dr. Rice next week. With him you are in the best possible hands concerning achalasia, just wait for him to tell you whether you do or you don't have achalasia. I can imagine it being hard on you to be unsure what the matter is, but time will tell (boy, did that achalasia teach me to be patient -LOL-).

As for the -ectomy:

Here on the board when we talk about -ectomy, we talk about an esophagectomy. During an -ectomy the esophagus is being removed. There are several ways to do so and I don't know all the ways there are. In my case they remove the esophagus untill a few centimetres below my jaws (neck area). They also remove half my stomach. The other half of the stomach will be pulled up into the neck area (they will form it in shape of a esophagus).

Kris,

Where was your manometry done? Was it at a larger or university

hospital? Unfortunately, if it wasn't, Dr. Rice may want it repeated

to help get an accurate diagnosis for you (sorry to tell you that),

and probably other tests. Make sure to take your records with you,

though, just in case. That may mean the actual films, manometry

tracings (measurements), etc. and not just the doctor's interpretation

of the test results. When we first traveled to Cleveland Clinic (3

1/2hr. drive from our home in Michigan), they told us to plan on

staying overnight so that any possible tests could be scheduled the

next day. Even though U of M had done barium swallow, manometry, and

other tests, they still wanted some repeated with their technicians

and equipment.

Keep in mind that there are other E motility disorders that you

could possibly have, so A is not the only possible diagnosis. One of

them, DES, what my husband happens to have, can progress to A. So

far, my husband's has not. In medicine and dealing with the human

body, I guess you can't always say there's a " typical " way a disease

progresses. At least you're going to the best place (in my opinion)

to get an accurate diagnosis. Good luck and please keep us posted on

how things go!
