Guest guest
Hi Vicki, Just a thought...but some of the things you describe about your middle child sound very much like NLD, a non-verbal learning disorder. These kids very frequently have a lot of difficulty writing..the combination of the grammar, writing mechanics, and forming thoughts is just too overwhelming to do at the same time. The symptoms vary greatly from child to child but the main way the disorder is diagnosed is because there is a large gap between verbal and performance scores as you mentioned. This diagnosis can be (but doesn't necessarily have to include) social skills problems, spatial & motor difficulties (meaning art is difficult as well as things that require gross motor skills) and a whole bunch of other things. If this sounds like your son, you may want to join a list for parents of NLDers, also available through egroups. I'd be happy to share more info off-list. I joined for awhile and did some testing for my daughter Kelsey but determined that she actually wasn't NLD even though she does have some of those challenges. I do seem to remember that some of the people on that list had all kinds of great accomodations for writing challenges so you might want to ask them For more info, check out: www.nldline.com and www.nldontheweb.org Take care, in San Diego

Thanks, & Rose & Jay & Jule - I do appreciate your ideas, and the above is one I've not heard of before. I will check it out. Because the last few years we have been trying to sort things out with the other two kids, and because worst difficulties sort of straightened out, I'm afraid his stuff has been kind of on the back burner. Which unfortunately is where he wants his " stuff " to be! But he is capable of more than just muddling through and I want him to have all chances possible. Will keep y'all posted - Vicki in MT
Guest guest
Dear Vicki, I have just started a new job and gosh almighty it is a big adjustment from at home mom to working gal. I WILL get you those URLs in a day or two. I think I know the addresses in my head, but I don't want to steer you wrong. Sorry about the delay. Guest guest
Dear Vicki, I feel that I know exactly what you are talking about with the stuck food issue. You think that if you can drink and if you feel fairly comfortable, that means the oesophagus must be clear. I wish ! I have come to accept that there is food hanging around in there for days, having realised this mainly due to fasting before endoscopy and finding out that Sunday's blended soup ingredients are still identifiable on Wednesday. That is why you need the myotomy, so that when you drink, the food there has somewhere to go instead of lying around in its very own self-made picnic area. The rule then, up to your surgery, has to be lots of fluids and as good food as you can cope with. No junk. And get friendly with the honey. It's reputed to be a natural antiseptic and so kind and soothing to your throat and oesophagus. I am no expert but can only pass on the tips that have worked for me. I hope for the very best for you Vicki. Lots of love from Ann in England xxxx
Guest guest
Ann, I agree with your suggestion of lots of fluids (Dr. Patti said the inflammation in my esophagus that my GI dcotor said was just part of my normal anatomy was due to stuck food). Good luck with your surgery!!! When you feel up to it, let us know how your recovery goes.
