Guest guest
Is the pH test something they do pre-surgery? I wasn't aware of needing that for achalasia. I thought that was more for reflux. From: achalasia [mailto:achalasia ] On Behalf Of david hamiltonSent: Friday, April 28, 2006 1:07 PMachalasia Subject: 24 hour PH test I had it and it was much better than the mammontry. The PH wire they put up through your nose and downinto the E is much much thinner the the mammontrytube. Except for the fact it was taped to my nose, Iwould sometimes forget about it, although when Iswallowed, I could kinda feel the wire, but not enoughto keep me from eating, 'course at that point in mydisease I couldn't eat much more than soups and softstuff anyway. My PH test was done at UCSF and being country bumpkinswho live 4 or 5 hours north, we took advantage ofbeing in San Francisco. As soon as the tube wasinserted my wife & I jumped on the buses, cable cars, etc. and went to China town and other tourist spots, all with this silly wire going down my nose, BUT Iblended right in with all the SF weirdness. The wire was attached to a computer thing around myneck, so I got to watch the PH read-out go up & downwith whatever I ate or drank, that was fun.Bad part was no alcohol allowed.Bottom line, don't worry, it'll be OK. But I washappy when they pulled it out.Dave=================================================Hey all! Well, my 24 hr ph test will be here before I know it and I'm getting VERY nervous. Guest guest
My doctor ordered this 6 months post-op to test for silet reflux. He said that if I had any reflux, I won't be able to feel it because basically everything down there is dead. So, if I have acid in my E, they need to control it so nothing bad happens from it. > > Is the pH test something they do pre-surgery? I wasn't aware of needing > that for achalasia. Guest guest
Thank you all for your kind words of encouragement, it really means allot!! I am planning on going to work, at least for 1/2 the day. My sister is taking off work at noon, and then we are going to a movie and shopping. Bad news is they have to do another manometry test. Since surgery, everything has been moved around and they want to be sure to place the probe in the rught spot. They did say they would do a shorter test, but the part that made me gag was the beginning. I think that is what has me so freaked out. > > I had it and it was much better than the mammontry. > The PH wire they put up through your nose and down > into the E is much much thinner the the mammontry > tube. Guest guest
a, You really have to decide what is freakin' you out. ;-) There was a post to this Board, probably within the last two months stating that their doctor used a narrower tube when performing the manometry, and consequently felt a lot less distressed. I think Giselle also mentioned that the manometry was not as bad as she anticipated it to be (all one has to do to have the fear of God in them about the manometry is to read 95% of the posts here, including mine. I mean, suffering from achalasia is bad enough, but to be " punished " for it by having a manometry done {and done again}, is insult to injury). a, please try to find out if you can have the narrower tube. > > > > I had it and it was much better than the mammontry. > > The PH wire they put up through your nose and down > > into the E is much much thinner the the mammontry > > tube. Guest guest
Dear a, Really, the manometry test, depending on who does it, isn't that dreadful. There is a time where you gag, most of that discomfort is probably due to being embarassed about it, otherwise it is just uncomfortable. My first doctor told me all of us (achalasians) throw up at a certain point and was prepared for it. I was at a different hospital for the 2nd one. (The first one was better.) They didn't seem to think I would throw up and didn't have the dreaded pink dish ready, that made me more uncomfortable. I insisted they get it and just gagged it all up when the tube went in and it was soon over. I see posts here about how dreadful they are and I hate to see people freak out. I find some things that happened to me at a gynecologists office worse. If the manometry is the last test before surgery, then maybe you can look at it as just a stepping stone to better eating. Guest guest
Hi a, So basically there is a very sound reason for doing this test. That should raise the feelgood factor in this for you. Preventive medicine is great, don't you agree? Are you beginning to feel better about it all now? Love from Ann in England xxx> >> > Is the pH test something they do pre-surgery? Guest guest
I had surgery almost 6 months ago, and feel awesome!! I had manometry done before surgery, when the tech saw me, she told me I looked like a 2 pan kind of girl, and had 2 puke pans waiting for me. But what she didn't know is I had an endoscopy jut 48 hrs before this and hadn't eaten anything solid for a week, so there was nothing to puke up, or so I thought. GROSS NASTYNESS, i say:) I know I'll be fine, but its just the waiting. With manometry, I didn't have much time to dwell on it, since it was order the morning after manometry. It wasn't all that bad, and the same tech is doing this one too. She was so kind and made me so relaxed, so i know I'm in good hands. She had me fill out a survey to mail in, and I gave her the best complements, and I also told her I hope I never have to see her again, but in a nice way:) Oh, and I plan on adding some pictures to my photo album with the tube in, why not share with all, right?? So stay tuned...... > > > > > > I had it and it was much better than the mammontry. > > > The PH wire they put up through your nose and down > > > into the E is much much thinner the the mammontry > > > tube. Guest guest
It isn't usually given if you have a diagnosis for achalasia. Reflux is the opposite of achalasia. Sometimes doctors don't know if it is achalasia and assume it is reflux and use that test, I guess maybe there are stronger PPI's or they are considering if you need a fundo. It seems like those with better gi's go to a barium test before a ph test. Sometimes I've heard of them giving it if a person had a fundo wrap for GERD, then later develop swallowing trouble. They are trying to figure out if it is primary achalasia or secondary achalasia due to a wrap being too tight. I also don't think doctors understand how painful our spasms are and do the ph test thinking it is acid. We soon grow accustomed to the spasms and give up finding a cure for them so we don't keep nagging doctors about them. I haven't ever had reflux, but some think the spasms and reflux feel the same. It is kind of common for there to be reflux after a myotomy, so some doctors do the ph test to see how strong the reflux is or if it is spasms. They sometimes seem to do it if the reflux drugs aren't working after a myotomy. In its simplest form achalasia and GERD are opposites, but doctors always assume GERD, so if PPI's aren't working then they often look for a GERD solultion sometimes before they consider a barium swallow, looking for esophageal strictures or achalasia or other esophagus problems. Okay, sorry that rambles. Guest guest
Dr Patti ordered my 24 hr PH test even after it was clear I had achalasia. I had already had the barium swaloow, the mammonmotry (x2) and endoscope (x2), so I don't know why the PH test. I kept telling everyone acid wasn't a problem, but " we just want to make sure " . So I guess they were still in the " rule out " phase.
