Guest guest
Jill, welcome to the group. Has your doctor tested for other problems, like gall bladder? There is no know cause for Achalasia. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. There is several people in the group that are very willing to help. Where do you live? Take some time and look over the group site, there is a lot of information in there. Again welcome to our family. in Suffolk In a message dated 4/17/2006 6:35:00 PM GMT Standard Time, jlongsta23@... writes: This my first post. Last December, I took 4 doses of Fosamax (for my bones). I have been ill ever since. I'm now scared to death that I have either Diffused Esophageal Spasms or A. I've had barium swallow but it showed I only had severe GERD. I've had my esophagus scoped but the muscosa was normal. I've been on 80mg of Protonix for almost 3 months and am still having weird symptoms. Everytime I eat or drink, I feel that is isn't going all the way down. I burp almost immediately after I eat or drink. I have back pain, jaw pain and tooth pain. I have lost a lot of weight. My doctor wants me to see a cardiolgist, which I will do tomorrow. I am convinced something has happened to my esophagus and that is what is causing all the problems. My GI doctor says the next step if a 24 hr ph. I guess my question is, has anyone in the group an pill-induced A? I am 56 years old and never had any digestive issues until now. Guest guest
I used to live in Wichita about 7 years ago. What do you do there? There is a list of questions on the group site that you can print out and take with you to your doctors appointments. Also I would write any questions down that you might think of and take them with you to your appointments. That way you will not forget to ask them. I have had some of the same types of pain as you have described. Do you feel like there is food sitting in you throat? Or pressure down by your stomach when you eat? Have you been regurgitating/throwing up? I know you said you have been loosing weight but is that cause you have not been eating as much or just cannot get any food down? How about liquids, are they giving you problems? in Suffolk In a message dated 4/17/2006 8:07:32 PM GMT Standard Time, jlongsta23@... writes: , I had my gall bladder out about three years ago. I guess when I said I had no previous digestive problems, I forgot about that. It was a simple operation and I have had no problems since this Fosamax thing. I've tried everything. I've learned to sleep sitting up. My nerves are shot! I live in Wichita, Kansas so, if this is my plight, I will insist on going to a good esphogeal clinic. Guest guest
I had a lot of pain in my back and jaw and I was having problems with eating again after my first surgery. That has gone away sense my second surgery. The wrap that was done on my first surgery was to tight and not in the best position. That was taken down in my second surgery and not redone. I have not pain now and I do not have any problems in eating. Well, I hope you can find out soon what is going on. Keep us posted on what you find out. in Suffolk In a message dated 4/17/2006 8:44:43 PM GMT Standard Time, jlongsta23@... writes: I am an administrator at a medical school (Kansas University School of Medicine-Wichita). Guest guest
Welcome to the boards! I am not as good as an expert as some here but to my knowledge A is not caused by anything particular it just kinda happens .My son is 12 and was diagnosed in Nov.He has had surgery and he had all the symptoms you descirbed. He evn does the burping stuff now after surgery to get the food to go down.I would get the test done and any others to find out if its A or not.The sooner its diagnosed and treated the better.Symptoms get worse and dont go away.Good luck- let us know what you find out and decide.Tonia > > This my first post. Guest guest
Are you going to doctors that specialize in esophagus problems? Often it seems like most gi's just assume GERD. The barium swallow is a good indicator... but maybe the doctor who administered it wasn't familiar with achalasia or other problems. I think strictures and other problems are more common than achalasia. I'd suggest a complete blood test, including thyroid. Then at a good facility (quality of the doctors is the most important issue) a manometry to see if there is a motility issue. I'd also suggest going to the absolute best doctors with esophagus disorders you can find, likely at a major teaching hospital. Taking these tests with inexperienced doctors is most generally a waste of time. Sandy in So Cal>> > Jill, welcome to the group. Has your doctor tested for other problems, like > gall bladder? Guest guest
Jill, I just reread your message and thought I might mention this... for me the taste was not bad enough in my mouth to make me rebrush my teeth. The regurgitation doesn't taste bad if done relatively soon after eating. This gets gross.... sorry.... but it is only food mixed with saliva, no stomach acids are mixed with the food. Actually some of us "rechew" and enjoy the bite a second time around. Wow, that sounds gross, can't believe I ever did that. IF you think about it, then it makes some sense. Having said that, if you are a longer term achalasia sufferer or have twists in your esophagus there may be bad tastes because the food is actually rotting in your esophagus. I'd be slightly more inclined to think it is reflux giving you that bad taste. Also, there has been some mention of bad teeth because of regurgitation. Logically I don't think regurgitation would damage teeth that much, because again, it is mostly food and saliva, not like the stomach acids that are present with bulimia. Many of us suffer from white foam, especially in the earlier states, even that doesn't really have taste, except a saliva taste. There can be some more yucky stuff if you really empty your esophagus, as sometimes happened with me and water, I think that was maybe thicker, older saliva that just wouldn't go down. I mention this stuff because it is little details that doctors probably don't really think about, although a really good gi doctor would ask if the food tasted bad coming back up. I think we choose and avoid foods because some are easier to regurgitate and some are just gross after having already chewed them once. I used peanut butter a lot because it didn't hurt coming back up and I worried about getting protein. Something like pasta or raw vegetables hurt a lot more coming back for a visit. Good luck. Sandy in So Cal.... nice day here... but please, why is there a spring break. I didn't grow up with one, seems like kids should be in school all year round anyway, why do they need a spring break. I think my kids are already to go back tomorrow, they are tired of me anyway. Sigh.> > >> > > > > > Jill, welcome to the group. Has your doctor tested for other > > problems, like > > > gall bladder? Guest guest
Sandy, Thanks for the good information. I will probably have the 24 hr ph test in the next few weeks to see if it is GERD. Guest guest
Peggy, Not too bad. A little hoarse and raspy in the morning. I feel that most of my pain is from spasms right after I eat. They last usually all day. I've quit eating an evening meal to try and get some sleep. If I eat late..oh boy. Pain is pretty bad. Jill > > > > > > > > > Jill, welcome to the group.
