Guest guest
I can't resist. Lived next door to a dog breeder. For young puppy... keep in a crate at night, next to you. Get up several times during the night, like a baby, and take outside to do her thing. Good dog her/(him if applicable) like crazy.... Making a fool out of yourself.Back in crate at night time... by your bed. Advantage is that if any barking or whimpering, then tap on the crate, when puppy is quiet good dog them to pieces... acting like a fool again.During day... use best judgement, but leave in crate if puppy is sleepy and take out when she wakes up to go outside. Good dog them all the time. Leave out of crate to play, but take outside about every half hour and if she does her thing then good dog them. I didn't ever leave them in crate during the day unless I wasn't there or couldn't watch closely. You really need to be observant as much as you can at first. The more observant you are at first, the quicker the payoff.Never, ever, ever rub their nose in it, or reprimand them if you didn't just see it happen. They only relate your praise or reprimand to the last thing they did. For instance if you just come home and see a mistake after your puppy runs up to you and you scold them, they think you are scolding them for running up to see you. Have to catch them doing it in order to scold. If they had the accident an hour ago they have no idea what they did wrong.I have a doggie door and of course So Cal weather.... modify for your weather. Don't have a clue about newspaper thing, I'd avoid it. But I'm not in an apartment. I've heard some dogs use litter boxes, but not my idea of a good thing. If you have to modify of course to your situation. Doggie door is the best thing in the world. Of course mine is so large that any human can come in, but my dog has a huge bark so bring it on!!!Crate sounds cruel.... I hated the idea, but puppies need the security and like it. It feels safe and like home. Don't use it as a bad dog place. They like the closeness and you'll notice they often crawl under furniture or in a corner so they don't care it is a crate, it is their comfort spot, as such they won't ever soil it.My dog breeder neighbor kept her crates (up to 12 dogs at a time) with doors open and each dog went to bed there. Except a few favorites that slept with her. Only puppies did she shut the door at night. Okay, yes, she didn't relate well to people. They won't soil in their own crate, that is the logic, so they learn to hold it. Then when you run them outside they go immediately and you can good dog them.If you are diligent for about 5 days you will be successful. Very few accidents. I promise. There might be an accident once a week, then once a month, etc. Just like a kid.I only did the crate for about 2 weeks with my retriever puppy, she outgrew it too fast. I was successful with this technique with 2 dogs, about 4 years old that we adopted from slightly negligent homes where they had a lot of accidents. After a few weeks no more accidents ever. I hated to do it, but a few times, the first few weeks with them, I had to leave them in the crate for about 4 hours during the day. You want them to have success so in a way it worked out. But you get them out and run them outside so they can do their thing immediately. They seem to immediately go if you pick them out of it and take them outside. Don't let them out of the crate and let them walk around before you take them outside. You've got to run and carry them out as soon as you open the door.My golden retriever, if she is in the front yard, has to come running in and go to the back yard for her business, she won't use the front. If, for some reason, you don't want the crate by your bed, then you can do it in another room, but you do really need to get up a couple times during the night.. and watch the water intake. Just like a newborn. It pays off in the future with a well trained dog though.Okay.... I know I sound like a know it all and I hate that, but I've been around some annoying dogs. I really only know 2 good tricks w/ dogs, the crate thing and how to make a dog leave you alone.Second lesson...If a dog jumps or does anything bad that you don't want them to do, you put your arms up like someone is mugging you and you turn your head far to the side so you can't make eye contact. Don't say ANYTHING, ignore them. They will do anything!!!! for attention, even if it is bad attention. Back to the retriever... they love to jump up and you can't have that, with yourself or friends. So as soon as they come, ready to jump, you put up your arms and turn your head, they will walk away. You have to be absolutely consistent... you have to tell everyone who comes close the rule. They will backslide if they get any attention, even if a NOOO or knee in the chest. (Although if you keep your face expressionless you might have to knee a puppy a little if they aren't getting the hint.) The key is no response. The summary, finally... Good dog them for anything you like. Even if they run too far.... in the street... if you shake the dog biscuit box and they run back you have to good dog them until their tail wags off and give them a treat because they came back to you. Can only respond to the last thing they did, whether good or bad.I did take our retriever to a dog training and the instructor was sooooo excellent. One of the few times someone knew their field so well. She drilled that into us. Of course I didn't teach all the tricks to my dog, but she doesn't ever jump.Oh...... last thing. If you walk the dog and they keep pulling on the leash, you just stop. They want to keep going. So if they are too fast or not right next to you, you just stop dead and they learn to keep the leash loose. In some instances you may have to jerk back lightly. I apologize.... this is soooooooooooo off track. And I sound like a know it all. Just couldn't resist sharing something I've learned. There are only a few things in life I'm positive about. Crates for training dogs and good dogging are at the top of my list. The rest of things I know for sure are......... hmmmmmmmmm, can't think of any..... Oh.... Medela (sp??) electric double breast pumps and freezing milk so you can have a life... baby will NOT be confused if you do it right away and use the bottle at least once a day....and team baby showering so you don't have to do the tub by the sink thing. .... let me know when you are ready for those lessons. Okay 4 things I know for sure. That is it. Oh... last part was for human babies, not puppies. Although.......???Sandy in So Cal. Think it was 85 here today... back to normal 70 tomorrow. However my kids are really curious about what snow is. No, don't send it. They can learn when they are 18.PS.... All I learned about raising kids I learned from that dog training instructor. Same logic. Okay... bluffing.... but pretty similar.>> Hey girl. How are you? I have not talked with you in a long time. How > are you feeling? I am pretty good. I am having some minor trouble > swallowing. Blah, Blah, Blah. Same old, same old.> > How were your holidays? Good I hope. Mine was pretty busy. Guest guest
My method is simple, it has worked for years; I always be sure to adopt an adult dog from the pound. She is going to be sure we did this together. I never heard anyone else be so close to my own advise. SCARY! The only thing I added is BE CONSISTANT!!!!
