Guest guest
, Your mashed potoatoes are swimming upstream against the current (personification of mashed potatoes). Think of it this way. Its like a sieve (personification of....oh, forget it!). The water makes it through the sieve because it is a liquid and that's what liquids do, run around obstacles (don't even start personifying that one). However, no such luck for the mashed potatoes. The water is just running rings around it, while the mashed potatoes sit there like a, you know, couch potato! That's my lesson for tonight....go to sleep. Get your Heller, and then I'll start talking to you about Diet Coke and nifedipines. Maybe not. Good luck with your surgery ! (light headed from working late) > > OK. I just don't getit. The E is essentially a pipe leading down to the LES, right? Yes, your esophagus is like a pipe, but it is not made of lead. Someone referred to it for this explanation as being like ladies panty hose. If you keep stuffing the hose they stretch and will hold more and more. That's where the food is staying in that stretched out esophagus. Some food apparently does get through but many here have lost a lot of weight in a short period of time because the food was not going down. Actually before my dilatation most of mine would come right back up and so did the water. I stayed hungry a lot, but I missed the water more. I was so thirsty all the time. Hope this helps Maggie
Guest guest
hey - you also have to remember that even after your Heller - when your LES should be open, we don't have peristalsis so if you can imagine trying to stuff mashed potatoes through panty hose, even with water - some of them will go down but not all of them. That's the kicker here, you will always need to drink water or fluids with your meals to push them down with gravity. The beauty is that after your surgery - it works for you a vast majority of the time (unlike now - i'm sure) and with the vast majority of foods. There are VERY FEW things I can't eat as long as I have something to drink and I pay attention. I do eat slow, I'm usually the last one to finish at the table but it's not like it takes me an hour or anything. Where you the one asking about follow up? Back in the day (mid-80's) I was told to follow up every 3-5 years with a barium swallow and EGD. Now I follow up about every other year - really not a big deal. I've been pretty good now for about 17 years post-op. Good luck with your surgery Enjoy that first swallow - try something warm or cold just so you can savor the sensation (as I sit here with my morning hot tea and feel it slide right into my stomach and warm me up!) Happy Swallowing! - in Va. > > > > So my question is: where is the food getting stuck? I just don't getit. Guest guest
I think the liquid leaks down gradually -- that was the picture I saw of the barium in my esophagus. I used gallons of water and actually pressured my esophagus so that my LES would flutter open, getting some food down. The rest come up -- probably 3/4 by the time I had surgery. Water is now used in much less volume, just to wash down the sides of my esophagus. Peggy > > OK. The food is getting stuck in the E for days at a time, " rotting " > " fermenting. Guest guest
Woo Chocolate, I’ve started that one again, for some reason it does go down easier. I don’t know why!!! I have almost cut bread out all together, meat will be next, but for now if I have a full glass I can get it down. So I’m bulking up on meat right now!! I know I another month of so it may be out of the question!!! I think I’m having problems with pills again, them not going down, I think they are floating sometimes. I don’t go back to Cleveland til may 12th to see Dr. A, anyone else on here seen him? in Indiana From: achalasia [mailto:achalasia ] On Behalf Of LunaIam2@... I would gulp a full 10 ounce glass of water at the time. I believe it was 3 or 4 months after I stopped being able to get liquids down before my dilatation. I did not dehydrate during that time so some of it must have been going down. I did this often because I was so thirsty. I, like someone else said on here, lived on chocolate also. Chocolate seems to go down more easily. Boy was that habit hard to break after the dilatation and I started to put on weight. I was well on my way from a balloon dilatation to a balloon Maggie. I love chocolate especially mixed with caramel. Maggie

Guest guest
--I was the same Maggie. I lived on chocolate. Many days though I just wasted them too, they couldn't go down. My doctor told me when I couldn't get water down to just put some in my mouth regularly coz you can absorb small quantities through your mouth too. I was extremely dehydrated and hungry before my surgery. - In achalasia , LunaIam2@... wrote: > > On 2/6/2006 at 10:37:49 A.M. Guest guest
LOL to funny I downed about 5 candy bars this weekend. Hmmm maybe there is another reason LOL, I’ve been crabby too,,,mmmmmm. Oh well. Stress will do some funny stuff to you won’t it. OH well, I can still eat for the most part, just no bread hardly now. Which is still good. Meat is getting harder tho, I’m gonna have to switch to fish and chicken only as beef is getting pretty tough.
