Guest guest Posted January 14, 2006 Report Share Posted January 14, 2006 I think the most obvious symptom is when aspiration happens at night, which is also the most likely time for it to happen for us lucky A sufferers. The most common feeling is like you are suddenly choking. You may wake out of a sound sleep and be gagging and coughing very hard. I’ve always been able to tell that’s what it is, although who knows if it’s possible to aspirate even a little and not know it. Guest guest Posted January 15, 2006 Report Share Posted January 15, 2006 Hi Kathie,Good to hear from you. I used to aspirate quite often but it doesn't seem to happen any more. That might be because I am so careful about having enough pillows in bed. The way that I understand it is that it is down to gravity isssues. If you lie too flat in bed, food left in the garden hose can diddle its way up to your bronchial tubes and make its way towards your lungs. Obviously your body, which is doing its best to protect you, doesn't like this and sets off your coughing reflex and you wake up coughing and spluttering until the food particles are cleared from your bronchial tubes and are redirected back down the correct way.The solution for me, then, to sum up, has been to be well propped up and lie on my left-hand side. If you see a diagram of your insides you will see that the opening to the stomach is directed to the left and it seems to me that this is another way to help with gravity. It's no good to try and pretend that if you don't eat for 4 hours or whatever before you go to bed the garden hose will be empty, because there could be stuff there 4 days later. Gross, but it seems to be true, so the best thing to do is prevent it redirecting upwards.Please note, for anyone who does not know, that 1) I am presently pre-myotomy and 2) I am not presenting this in medical terms. Sometimes it takes several coughing spells to finally get done with it. You may feel poorly the following day, probably becasue you body is fighing off the invasion of your lungs. Now that I have had my myotomy, I have only aspirated once, after my food poisoning episode. Are you getting new symptoms? Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Share Posted January 16, 2006 I had Bronchitis before Christmas but it totally went away. I have Chronic Bronchitis so I am VERY familiar with it. I have a new VERY deep cough that feels different. I notice a pain in my upper left back. It is not intense, but I am very aware of it, and it seems to increase with a large intake of breath ... but not every time. I am more exhausted than usual. It is a real struggle to get everything done, and that is not normally a problem. No fever. I have a call into the doctor. Hopefully they call back. I just requested a chest xray. My doctor is not in, and I don't really want to see someone else as they are not familiar with the disease. My youngest son had aspiration pnemonia a few years ago and he had pain in his back but he also had a fever...I am hoping this is not the case for you and that you are only having pain from all the violent coughing. Please try to get in for that x-ray just to be on the safe side and keep us posted! PS--I just wanted you to know that yours was the first name I jotted down and put in a pretty blue vase that has just become my own prayer vase. What a good feeling that was! When I had my chest x-ray at St. Clair Hospital they said I had pluerasy. They pain in my back seemed like a pulled muscle. That is why I didn't do much about it. I am having a tough time with aspiration right now. I may need another botox shot to loosen up the les. I the past three weeks is just got very hard to swallow and I try to empty my E after each time I eat. I had aspiration yesterday standing up!! The stress of the Steeler game didn't help. I hope it's only the coughing and cold that's made you sore. I don't think you should be embarrassed about going to the doctor, even if it turns out to be only a cold. I think HE should be embarrassed for saying he knows about A and doesn't! I also think your name definitely deserves a place of honor in a prayer vase!
