Guest guest
Before surgery the tests showed I had 0.00 % function of the esophagus. The surgeon said that would not improve after surgery, but I thought the surgery would make it possible for everything I ate to go down, maybe I mis understood? It is NOT nearly as bad as before the surgery. Before, literally everything I ate came back up, so I guess I should not be complaining. Thanks for your input Dave > To Dave (I think...) - my surgeon told me that most > people have a decline in > function....do you think it is as bad as it was > before surgery? It's really important to remember that the surgery will open up your LES allowing food to pass but there is not anything at this time that will fix our peristalsis. You will ALWAYS need to drink water to wash your food down. I would also highly recommend drinking something in the evening a few hours before bed to 'rinse' out anything that is lingering or did not go down from dinner. I drink hot herbal tea every night - I find it very relaxing and I think it helps because I rarely aspirate. Surgery is not a cure- it's a workaround. That being said, I'm 17 years post op - I can and do eat most anything I want - you get used to a 'new normal'. I DO NOT eat without water nearby - but it's not a gallon of water like it was back in the day, it's a normal, drinking glass of water. Good luck to Leann, Deborah and anyone else getting ready for surgery - you'll look back and think 'why didn't I do this sooner?' Happy Swallowing! in Va.
