Notan,

So glad to hear that your myotomy went well!

Thank-you, .

I don't know the numbers on the pressure of his

contractions, but they were very high amplitude, ... I guess his

LES works fine, though, so he's got DES not A.

DES is interesting. Sometimes the contractions are high amplitude

but they don't have to be to be DES. The pressures in DES and LES

pressures in achalasia are not comparable. In one DES study I saw, they

considered contraction above 180 mm hg to be high.

I'm glad Mayo worked out well for you. I guess I don't hear much

about Mayo's doctors on this site.

I have wondered why that is. I have read that in Rochester alone

they do thousands of manometries a year and have one of the largest

gastroenterology departments. My surgeon listed achalasia as one of her

interest on her Mayo web page. I found her by calling the clinic and

asking who did a lot of Heller's myotomies. Then my wife got busy and

lit a fire under my doctors and insurance co. to get an appointment.

You and her probably have a lot in common. I have read that something

like 2 to 4 percent of first time manometries are positive for DES. If

that is true, and they do thousands, well you can do the math. I would

also suspect that they get others that have had manometries elsewhere.

I had wondered if it may be an

option for my husband to see someone there.

I don't know but it may be worth a call.

How to Contact Mayo

Doctors in

Diffuse Esophageal Spasm is listed as one of the "Common Disorders

Seen by the Esophagus Interest Group."

http://www.mayoclinic.org/gi-rst/esophageal.html

If you click on a doctor, the doctor's page will list areas of

interest and sometimes a link to published papers.

Any idea if the

Minnesota Mayo docs are well versed in esophagus motility disorders?

The ones I talked too seemed to be. We talked only about achalasia

though. I have no idea if they would have something you have not heard

already. I have at times looked to see if I could find anything useful

on DES for you, but there seems to be very little on treatment. I have

wondered if at some point removing the esophagus would be an option. I

have not seen that listed as an option though.
