Guest guest
Yikes, let me clarify that... surgically creates a GERD [situation], as the LES remains open as in Reflux. A myotomy cuts the sphincter so it cannot close, and GERD can be a result of a myotomy. Carolyndrgioia75 <santanagioia@...> wrote: >> Heidi, alot of the folks here have had a myotomy. Guest guest
Just a reminder that if you have a VATS myotomy you don't usually have gerd either. VATS cuts higher up the esophagus and less into the stomach. That is the advantage. Fundoplications might cause more complications later by being too tight or too loose, that is the advantage of VATS surgery. Old news, I know, but new members.> I just want everyone to understand that you cannot just go by the > results of manometry to diagnose Achalasia.> > They diagnosed me with just the results of a manometry. Guest guest
Just a fine point on myotomy creating GERD, if the surgeon is precise and skillful enough to cut the muscle of the LES, GERD does not have to be the result. I am walking proof. Peggy of Lompoc, VATS myotimized but not wrapped, no reflux or reflux meds > I just want everyone to understand that you cannot just go by the > results of manometry to diagnose Achalasia. > > They diagnosed me with just the results of a manometry. It is usually efffective in many patients, but not all. After I had nine from USC's DR Jeffery s and Dr. Demeester, I felt no relief in swallowing, only pain. There are many factors involved: the extent of procedures performed on the l.e.s., the amount of scar tissue formed on the l.e.s. and individual physiological differences. I was told the only remaining option is a colonic interposition--a highly invasive operation necessitating an incision from the ear to the groin, removal of the esophagus and l.e.s., moval of a segment of the colon with its blood sample intact. This extensive operation would still leave one with GERD, fecelent food relux or aspiration in the lungs or sinuses, episodic pneumonia, bronchistis, sinusitis, etc. The only thing it would treat is the pain from the l.e.s., which can be done without the huge risks that this operation would entail. steve > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > > > Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs. If by "radial" you mean THE incision is radiating up and down from the LES, then ok radial it is. If by "cuts" you mean one incision produced by more than one cutting motions then ok "cuts" it is. If by "around" you mean near and not circling then ok "around" it is. One incision a little down the stomach and a little up the esophagus. Guest guest
Several have been down this road and they will undoubtedly chime in here -- several have been successful after this tough surgery in getting some relief. Good luck Peggy > > > > > > J>> > the myotomy allows the LES to open; not necessarily > disallowing it to close. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Wooleeacre Productions > > > > Custom Screenprinting > > > > on a small scale! > > > > > > > > > > > > > A mytotmy is a procedure that makes radial cuts around the > l.e.s. and is usually accompanied by a funsuplication to support the > weakened area. Guest guest
I am nearly 6 weeks post myotomy and I have no GERd troubles at all. Just in support of Peggy's comment. > > I just want everyone to understand that you cannot just go by the > > results of manometry to diagnose Achalasia. > > > > They diagnosed me with just the results of a manometry.
