I have never heard of "mega esophagus" but I believe that is the stage I am at given the odd suggestions of esophogeal diverticula, odd shaped bariums and symptoms I have had. ... Mega-esophagus means the esophagus is dilated (widened) to a diameter of 8 cm or more. Another term is Tortuous Esophagus (not torturous, though we may feel we are being tortured) , which means crooked, twisted or bent. An esophagus can be both dilated and tortuous. It could also, with those, have diverticuli which are pouches. Those conditions can make treatment less successful. However, according to Guidelines.gov, "The need for esophagectomy for achalasia is very uncommon, even in the presence of a dilated esophagus, and should be reserved for failures after myotomy." Just a guideline but that is their opinion.
