Mega-esophagus means the esophagus is dilated (widened) to a

diameter of 8 cm or more. Another term is Tortuous Esophagus (not

torturous, though we may feel we are being tortured) , which means

crooked, twisted or bent. An esophagus can be both dilated and

tortuous. It could also, with those, have diverticuli which are

pouches.

Those conditions can make treatment less successful. However, according

to Guidelines.gov, "The need for esophagectomy for achalasia is very

uncommon, even in the presence of a dilated esophagus, and should be

reserved for failures after myotomy." Just a guideline but that is
