VENT! - Visit to Pediatrician

Yesterday, I took my son (2 1/2, apraxic) to see the Pediatrician.

He had stuffed little pieces of hot dog in his ears, and I wanted to

make sure we got them all out - how embarrassing! I'm still laughing

about it!! Anyway, I thought I'd ask the Dr. about the nasal

emissions/ENT referral while we were there.

I need to give a little background. This Ped. practice has about a

dozen doctors. The one who referred us to Children's when our son

was 18 months old had told me that if any of the other doctors had

seen us that day, we wouldn't be where we are right now - in therapy

and progressing wonderfully. I found out just how right she was

yesterday.

The doctor who saw my son yesterday said he doesn't " believe " in

apraxia. He went on to tell me about his kids - 4 out of 6 of them

didn't utter a word until they were around 2 1/2 years old. He also

gave me the old " Einstein didn't talk until he was 4 or 5. " I didn't

know whether to laugh at the man or yell at him!!! Needless to say,

he didn't think we needed to " bother " with seeing an ENT.

I am so grateful to the doctor we saw a year ago, and so thankful to

God that she was open-minded enough, and educated enough to have us

look into the matter further. has progressed so far, so

quickly, and I attribute most of that to finding out about the

apraxia at such a young age (18 months). Thank You, God!!!

If there are any 'lurkers' here who have Peds. like the one I saw

yesterday, and are unsure about their children's speech development,

get another opinion - the sooner the better!!

Hi Tammy,

I fully agree with what you said about second opinions, and I know how you

feel regarding some of these doctors.

Our old Ped - we have since switched - kept telling me that there was

nothing wrong with my daughter, and refused to refer her to EI or any

specialist. I contacted EI and had her seen by a Dev Ped on my own, who

diagnosed oral and verbal apraxia, hypotonia, and Sensory Integration

Dysfunction -- after reading the report, the Ped said that the Dev Ped

didn't know what he was talking about. I was furious. That doctor gave me

the impression that she felt that if it can't be treated with medication, it

doesn't exsist.

You know your child better than any doctor, and if you feel that something

isn't right, you owe it to your child to get a second and sometimes third

opinion, even if you have to pay out-of-pocket.

Sounds like its time to find a new peds practice! I had our ex-pediatrician

tell me I was just a young mother too busy comparing my baby to others when

I took my daughter in at 7mths worried over the fact that she still couldn't

roll over or hold her head up. I ignored him and took her myself to get a

second opinion in which they immediately started physical therapy. With

lots of therapy and hard work she now walks fine and continues with physical

therapy along with speech. Still waiting to see results from speech therapy

(keeping my fingers crossed)
