Guest guest
Is the picture in the data base... Here is says not stored. Also I got an email back from this board's owner, , he doesn't know how to do a map, but would gladly support us if anyone has a clue. He thought it was a good idea. Any geeks here? Dear Anita, I sent a private message... check the group achalasia home page and click on database and see if there is a doctor in your area. Also Kathie is in your area. And here is my favorite link: Put in your city and achalasia in the search and the hospitals should pop up. Keep putting in our key words and doctors names and you will be a walking achalasia encyclopedia in a couple of minutes. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search & DB=pubmed Sandy > > > > I do not have many pics but here is one with what my wife calls my mini me. Guest guest
Dear , We were wishing for a map where you run your cursor over an area and a dot or something would show who on the this board is in that area. That is, if they wish to be contacted. One for us and also maybe one for doctors and hospitals. Is that what we were wishing for? Input? The group website owner is down at the bottom on the achalasia group homepage. His name is . So many of us post often but there are a lot of lurkers who may be supportive that don't post so often. Guest guest
Dear , Of course the important part is we all get one share of stock in the Achalasia Map Company for every post we have made so far. Then we are rich when we sell the map idea. LOL They we use one of the travel agents here and have a cruise to some exotic location with our favorite doctors on board and everyone gets treated while on the cruise if they need it. Maybe some nip and tucking if we have already healthy. We all barter all our skills while on board and live in an achalasia world, similar to neopets.com (if you have kids you know what I mean.) And all live happily and healthy ever after, rich from our map sale. We have an annual cruise for new members and upkeep. Now , if you design it you may have to get more stock. Guest guest
Hi Sandy and , This really cracks me up because, when I say the word Achalasia, I get this blank stare .... So I say, " doesn't it sound like a lovely place in the South Pacific? ... but trust me, you do NOT want to visit! " Therefore, when we book that cruise .... ABSOLUTELY no stops in ACHALASIA!!! Guest guest
I always draw pictures of what is going on with "A". That seems to help a little. But I think people still do not really get it....lol

I really can't believe that there are only two of us in South Africa - there must be others who have access to the internet. Even if the don't want to post or join in with the chatter for what ever reason it would be nice to know there is someone else in your area. Guest guest
Okay Sandy -- I am not so dumb -- but I can't figure out how to search the way you suggested. Can you take us through step by step? Thanks Peg > > > > > > > > I do not have many pics but here is one with what my wife calls > my mini me. Guest guest
I'll try.... Near the top of that link there is a search box with " for " in front of it, I accept the default for searching through PubMed. I start by putting in the teaching hospitals or the hospital(s) I am able to go to. (I'm in Los Angeles area so there are many of them, obviously many will not have these choices.) Then with that hospital I put in a key word, like achalasia. If that doesn't return many matches, then I go back up the key word chain with words like gastroenterologist, myotomy, fundoplication, laproscopic etc. I probably keep open another internet explorer browser and put in the hospital and search by esophagus, gi, etc. etc. Then if I get doctors' names I go back to PubMed and just put their name in... you have to be careful about initials. I see what they publish. They may be very good, but don't publish about achalasia... I'm looking for their general level of expertise. Then I go spy on their website. I did this, for curiosity with USC, which has a major teaching hospital and is highly regarded. So I come up with Drs. DeMeester & Dr. s. Now I'm turned off, because I did know their names just from google searches. Dr. s left USC last summer and is on the East Coast now. Big turn-off to me. You'd think USC could have a current website. (I hadn't looked for him or at USC since last spring.) (Second level of irritation is that I paid a lot for a graduate degree from USC and you'd think they could afford to have someone keep their web pages current. But I digress. They sure keep their alumni association database current to call me for donations. I'm going to tell them that next time they call.) Now with these Dr. names I see what else they publish and how current it is. This website goes back a long time. ly, I kind of ignore stuff even in the 90's because that is when lap and VATS really grew acceptance. However, once those procedures were successful, which the late 90's articles describe, there aren't that many articles about the success of the procedures. Then I just keep typing in words and compare what I find locally with what is happening overall. The key words I use are just the regular words we now use. Manometry, botox etc. etc. I just bounce between the website for the hospital and doctor and the medline one. Again... the best surgeon or gi may not publish about achalasia. I looked for thoracic surgery experience, schools they attended and general expertise. If the hospital website didn't put any emphasis on esophagus issues or gi issues, then I somewhat judged they weren't so good at those things. USNews and World Report has " BEST " lists and I went back and looked at best hospitals and best medical schools. This is historical data however, some places moved up and down, but the hospital you are going to should be on that list. That is a free website for their old data... you should be able to find it on google. One major reason I chose my surgeon was that he and his associate had their surgical residencies at MD in Houston. My Dad had treatment there for leukemia and they are supposedly the world leader for leukemia treatment. They are excellent at cancer treatment overall. Their lung cancer treatment is excellent and if he had his residency there I figured he should be good. Sorry this is so long... it wasn't step-by-step for me. I did it little steps and often while doing homework with my kids, on the phone and watching trash tv. Back to USC ???? What are the thinking???? I want some money back. A few months behind okay but almost a year??? Obviously you may not have as many choices in hospitals. My feeling is that if you are in the sticks of Montana (being from there, I can say it) I likely wouldn't go to Billings for treatment. Once you get on a plane and face the hotel bills and travel expenses, one place is about as expensive as another. Then you have a lot of choices.
