Guest guest
Lois - This is great! Where do you live? We are in the midst of our IEP and our son's program sounds similar to yours. However, we are right now struggling with services for summer -- extended school year or ESY in the land of acronyms. Last year (who is 7) had six weeks of a four-day-a-week program, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. The morning he worked on his academics in a Resource Room (Special Ed)-type setting, and had his speech (30 minutes each day) and OT once a week(45 minutes). In the afternoon he attended a day camp program with an aide (had lunch with his peers, and participated in the afternoon program). The Special Ed Director in our district has been under intense pressure from the other Special Ed directors in the county to *not* offer the program again this year, so we are finding ourselves having to fight again for comparable services this year. Is anyone else getting ESY services, and if so, where do you live and what do they look like (how much per day, for how many weeks, what kind of services, etc.). Any information would be greatly appreciated and would really help our effort here in Michigan - thank you! --Kathleen-- >From: lois noland <jlois@...> > >Hello, I just had my sonds IEP meeting for next year. JJ only has 1 month (July) that he has ESY. its from 8 to 12 each day of the week. But since he gets the (wraparound) program someone comes to the home in the summer about 20 hours a week. Guest guest
What may be helpful is to (and I know that does not always occur) request assistance from the local ASA Chapter (start one if needed?) as there is strength in numbers. Although it may be easier for a system to negotiate with one parent at a time, the more a system must contend with in the way of parents, the better for all. My oldest son initially received (at age 6) full day ESY in July. At age 7 I had to pay for it. From age 8-12 I paid for a summer camp for special population children which is now ESY-certified by the county, but was not then. Once he was put into private placement he received five weeks of ESY. This year I plan on 10 weeks of the teenage camp for sp pops as ESY as he has been approved for ESY but I think he needs more than five weeks but more for social skills. Guest guest
By the way, his ESY was in MD initially, VA for five years and MD for the 10 weeks.

Guest guest
, do you mean your private evals or the evals that the town does? With the private evals, they accepted my dev. ped's since it was done a couple of months before the IEP meeting, but my last private speech eval had been done more than a year before so that was not accepted. If you mean the town's evals, they can do it a few mths before going right up to it. But of course, you are entitled to have the evals done ahead of time and have the written reports submitted to you for review ahead of the meeting. There is also a good IEP group at that can be very helpful. I will talk to you directly, Carolyn
Guest guest
, I do not think that they are obligated to furnish these to you prior to the meeting. Common courtesy is that they should, of course, but my experience has been otherwise in my own case and in advocating for others. I also request that I have them at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. It has happened a few times but that is out of alot of times that I have requested it. Guest guest
There is no legal requirement that they give you evaluation results a certain time before the IEP. I have always made a point of talking directly to the person writing up the evaluation and telling them I want to see the report as far in advance of the IEP meeting as possible. Doesn't hurt to put that in writing also in a friendly " as we discussed " note. I have always been able to get them at least several weeks ahead. Getting draft IEP goals more than 2-3 days ahead has been harder, but I am persistent and also let them know well in advance (also confirmed in a friendly note) that I expect to see them ahead of the meeting. The obligation is mutual -- I also make a point of preparing my own present level of performance and getting it to evaluation personnel in advance of the evaluations, and then preparing my own proposed IEP goals and getting them in the hands of the actual person drafting the IEP well before they draft goals. I have found the key had been communicating directly with the person doing the work -- I think I was supposed to filter everything through a central administrator, but found that what I was sending was not getting into the hands of the people doing the evals or writing the IEP, and they also were not getting the message about my expectations of advance copies. I also find that to be true after the IEP is done -- the teachers and therapists often are given nothing but the IEP pages relevant to their area, but are not given the evaluations, other goals, or my present level of performance write-up or any info about related areas that might be relevant (e.g. the SLP not aware of hypotonia or dyspraxia because it is not mentioned in the speech goals, but is in the OT/PT goals she does not see). Now I always make a point of making up a package of what I think they ought to have from the total record and delivering it to them in person. They have always been extremely grateful, and it seems to jumpstart therapy. ============================================================================ This message contains information which may be confidential and privileged. Guest guest
I was just informed by the Federation for Children with special needs that once you request an Eval be done, in writing... that they have 5 days to respond, 30 school days to complete the eval, then the report " should " be done with in a week, then once the eval is received by YOU and them, the meeting must be set up within 2 days. Also, DO NOT sign the IEP there! Take it home and review it, it is really confusing!!! Not sure where you are, or if this company is all over, but let me know if you want info to them, they've been great to me! Theresa tcrave88@...
