Guest guest
Cindi, I am so sorry you are having these awful pains. I have never had spasms that bad, thank goodness. I have had, what I call mini spasms, off and on all day a few times but never that bad. I think your doctor should have sent you to the ER to have it checked out. If the motrin has not worked by now I think I would go have them check it out and maybe give you a shot or something to stop that pain. There is no sense in having to hurt that bad with all the pain meds we have available. Let us hear from you. We care! Hugs Maggie
Guest guest
I have had spasms for years, but nothing like this, especially since my myotomy. Please let me know if any of you have experienced it. I started with "normal" spasms that I sometimes get when I haven't slept right, ate too much or something. That was Saturday at noon. No biggie. I took my magnesium and it helped. At 3:00 AM today (Sunday), I woke up & have been up ever since in excruciating pain. The pain is lower than usual....In the middle of my back, to the right of my spine, but feels the same as spasms, only NOTHING will stop it. About every 20-30 seconds, it feels like someone is jabbing a knife in my back. I have tried heat, pressure, cold, bath, shower, tried to sleep, magnesium, etc..... Finally called the Dr. who said to get motrin (hubby is out getting it now) and come see him in the AM. It totally feels like spasms, but lower and it just won't quit. I have broken down in tears several times today from the pain and I nearly went to the ER a couple times. Anyone ever have this? My husband thinks it's my gall bladder, but it really feels muscular to me. Cindi

Guest guest
I used to get this all the time even before my swallowing problems and before being diagnosed. It sounds similar to your pain. Sometimes it was stabbing other times it was more dull and it would be felt in my back to the right side. When this first started I had no other symptoms so my doctor sent me for a scan to check for gall stones, but it didnt show anything and we left it at that. I used to just drink water when I had this pain and it seemed to help some of the time, at other times it would not. I have not had this kind of pain for about 7 months now it is more in the chest now and to the right side of my body. Wishing you all the best. Guest guest
Hi Cindi I know what you mean! I get serious spasms about once evry 2 weeks and smaller ones in between. I ended up calling the paramedics once and was taken to ER. I really thought I was having a heart attack. It turned out to be a very bad spasm and now I get these every couple of weeks but I can recognise when one is about to start. I have read what others have said about their remedies that help, such as guzzling cold water, some take a fizzy drink, some CCBs etc. But when I have one of these attacks it's no good as I literally can't move so I can't reach water or tablets. I've bought my self a TENS machine from ebay and if my boyfriend is around when I have an attack he puts it on for me (my spasms are always in my back). This I have found to help me a lot. I could live with the Achalasia but the spasms? I wish they would go away for good! I told my doctor at the GI clinic about my spasms and he said they are not related to achalasia. I told him about this group and how many of us get spasms yet he sticks to his guns and tells me they are still nothing to do with achalasia. I live in the UK and have decided to go to the USA for private treatment. This really irritates me as I have worked all my life and paid my insurance for health services to find that when I really need them they simply cannot deliver. Well, I'm glad I got that off my chest. The more I think about the UK health services, the angrier it makes me. I'm going to try and relax now. It helped me with the spasms and also got rid of the white froth that used to fill my mouth when belching or leaning over. HTH
Guest guest
Hi Cindi, I just thought of something else. A while ago my son had terrible pain in his chest and they did all sorts of tests and could not find the cause.[he does not have achalasia] He happened to go to the physiotherapist for his back spasm and she found that he had 'popped' a rib out of place just where the ribs join the spine. She popped it back by sharp pressure to the spot and the pain went immediately. The same thing happened to me but not quite so dramatically. The phyiso was also able to push the rib back into place after she had released the muscle spasm !!! I'm not saying this was your problem but it did occur to me as a possible reason for this awful almost paralysing pain - especially as you say they ofund your back muscles in spasm. Glad it is over - hope it never returns, Hugs, Joan
Guest guest
Hi Cindi I sure hope you found some sort of relief for that nasty spasm or whatever it was. They sure can be debilitating at times. Since about 3 weeks after surgery, I have been lucky. I am very curious as to why it would hit you NOW…. Since you are one who seems to be able to manage them. -----Original Message----- From: Cindi Wilmot [mailto:cindiscandles@...] Sent: Sunday, January 02, 2005 1:55 PM achalasia Subject: wicked spasms I have had spasms for years, but nothing like this, especially since my myotomy. Guest guest
My god sweetie, that's ME. That pain in the middle of my back, just to the right of my spine and below my chicken wing (my shoulder blade). Couple that with the sharp/squeezing pain in my throat at my collarbone, and add on some more sharp pain just under my right breast and some vomiting... Occasional right-side tongue, tooth and ear pain too and it's all wrapped up. My husband knows where that spot on my back is instinctively now, so he can press on it without even having to feel around for it. It's like a knot, isn't it? with big sharp pain in it. I get these every month, either during my period or the week before or after. I don't know what causes it because I'm on a pretty regimented diet (almost the same thing every day), and am not under too much stress. It just sucks. I take some phazyme (anti-gas) during that time because it feels like I can't burp at all. I also take my levsin (sublingual), and chug the ice water. I've been to the dr. when it's happening (just my regular family dr) and she hooked me up to a heart machine (what is that, an EKG, EEG? with the little round things and the wires they stick to your skin) and everything looked fine heart wise. I've also been to the chiropractor to see if it's something he can pop back in place, but it didn't do any good. Usually I'm out for 2 days when it happens. I'm 6 years post-op with a lap heller's myotomy with a partial fundoplycation at UofM Ann Arbor, with great success for the swallowing, but lousy effects on my spasms. No post-op procedures like botox or dilations as yet. I sure hope you feel better!! Take care and let me know if anything works! k > I have had spasms for years, but nothing like this, especially since my > myotomy. Guest guest
Hi I'm not saying that what you're experiencing is spasms, but I've had exactly the same type pain you described and it turned out to be spasms. My doctor prescribed Procardia 10mg 3 times per day to prevent the spasms and a sublingual drug called NuLev (a form of Levsin) to stop one when it happens. Between the two drugs it did the trick. Just some background on me... I've had " A " for a little over 20 years, 2 open Hellers, and I've had what I call " little " spasms before I was even diagnosed 20 years ago. (by " little " I mean bad, but they only lasted about 15 or 20 minutes) About 2 years ago the spasms started becoming more frequent and severe. So severe in fact, they were ruining my life. They would happen at least two times in a week and last anywhere from 1 to 2 days. They got so bad that when I wasn't having a spasm, I was worried one would hit. I knew the spasms weren't going to kill me, but as bad as it sounded.. there was a time when I wished they would. It took my doctor awhile to hit the right meds, but between the Procardia and NuLev I'm virtually spasm free now. The meds have given me back a normal life. I never leave home without the NuLev and I even keep a little bottle attached to my keychain with 2 or 3 pills in it. I hope you can find some relief too. Good luck.
