My question is....NCCP's are not always spasms, are they? Non Cardiac Chest

Pain seems as thought it would be any pain in your chest that is not from your

heart. So wouldn't heartburn/reflux be NCCP? So I always use the term spasm

for myself, because that is what I get. Cindi

Hi Cindi - it does get complicated doesn't it?? I know for myself, I

seem to have a couple of varieties of NCCP's. I would certainly

classify heartburn as one but I don't get just straight out heartburn

very often and honestly, I would take heartburn any day of the week

over spasms.

Here's how I would classify my 'spasms':

*plain old heartburn - I can usually just drink some water and it

goes away with time- no big deal really

*what I've always called 'being bubbly' I think it's what most

everyone around here refers to as 'gurgling noises'. You can actually

hear the gassy bubbles when I drink something. Very hard to get rid

of, not as painful as straight out spasms but more annoying in a lot

of ways

*plain old spasms - most painful, usually most associated with

stress, aggravated by coffee or smoking. Heavy, tight feeling in my

chest, occasionally leads to vomiting. I used to take procardia/nitro

but found the side effects to be too much. I now use hot tea - even

hot water in a pinch, When I'm not pregnant, I have a script for

Ativan. During the night, I prop myself up on my couch or chair and

sip hot tea until I relax enough to fall asleep.

Unfortunately, no set answer to any of them. Anyone else find they

have different pains?

Also, anyone out there used both procardia/nitro and levsin(?) I

don't like the side effects of the first but haven't tried the levsin

yet - I was wondering if the side effects were any milder.

Happy Swallowing to all!

I've had Heartburn one time in my life. (Funny, isn't it, that I took

about every prescription under the sun for heartburn before they

finally decided it wasn't heartburn) I had it just this last year (6

years post-op when I had eaten pizza late at night (i know, I know,

big no-no). I felt it when I was getting ready to go to bed. I

actually remember thinking out loud, " Hmm. So THIS is heartburn " . I

giggled for a second, closed my eyes and went to sleep. Kinda like -

That's It??? (no offense to those of you who do have really bad heartburn)

I'd have to say I have the last kind of spasm where I have a sharp,

piercing pain starting at my sternum, it feels like someone's

squeezing my esophagus with their fist, i have a pain that shoots

through my back right by my shoulder blade on the right side. I

sometimes get a cramp-type feeling in my tongue and neck, and a

burning pain in my right jaw, teeth and right ear. It lasts for as

long as it pleases and only goes away when it wants to. Kinda like a

bad boyfriend. haha Like I've written before, I can't really associate

it with any certain activity, food, drink, stress level, or anything

else. I'm pretty much at it's mercy, like I'm sure, the rest of us are.

My dr. just prescribed Levsin for me on Monday, so I'll let you know

how it works. (provided I haven't had an intervention of a higher

authority who's decided that I won't HAVE the spasms anymore - keep

prayin, right?)
