Guest guest
I am one week post heller. Food gets stuck sometimes but it is an improvement. No shooting pains. Hope you feel better and get over the shooting pain. Need an update on hellermyotomy Its been 2 years since I have had the surgery done to help with my achalasia. I still get flair ups where I can't swallow and food gets stuck. My question is for those who have also received the surgery are you getting anyother problems now? I have recently begun getting a sharp shooting pain that either starts at my glands in my neck and travel down into my chest or vise versa. The pain comes on at anytime and whether or not I ate. Its not a burning pain but a sharp shooting one. I use to be able to take to antacids and it would go away but now its up to 4 antacids and a glass of water before the pain goes away. Not only that but its now lasting longer and longer every time i get it. I don't get it all the time but enough for me to have some concerns. I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem.-n-
Guest guest
Hi n, Sounds like you are getting spasms - look at the website for more details and at some back posts. I don't get them so will leave the discussion to those that do ! They are a problem that many people with achalasia have to deal with and it is an ongoing battle. Good wishes and welcome. Guest guest
Hi N My husband will be two years post-op in January, and he suffers from spasms. It really sounds like you must be starting with them. My husband has had many tricks over the past several years to subside his spasms. He started out gulping water - this was prior to his surgery and truly prior to his swallowing diffulties. Since surgery, his spasms seem to be few and far between, but he gets them in spurts - He has been using pretzels and water - he eats the pretzels and doesn't use his water until he gets a stuck feeling then he drinks the water - this usually does the trick for him - he also will take motrin after a spasm and this usually keeps them from coming back that day or the following days. If you look in the files that are on this site there is an entire list of the tricks that people use for spasms. As far as swallowing difficulty, knock on wood, my husband is able to eat everything still with a little help from water and gravity. I hope that this helps you. > Hi n, > Sounds like you are getting spasms - look at the website for more details and at some back posts. Guest guest
Hi again Doug! I am really happy to hear that you are so far having such great results with your heller. There are many of us out there. And many more soon to come! Take care! Re: Need an update on hellermyotomy So far so good. Operation made a significant improvement in my swallowing. Yes food on occasion still gets caught but it is usually my fault. Wrong food, pieces too large or eat too quickly or no fluid available. One of the tricks I learned is to eat mash potatoes, hot fluid while eating meat. I use one of those microwaveable Soup cans 6 oz at home and in the office to warm water quickly. I usually drink green tea since it prevents esop cancer and you are at slight risk of esop cancer when you have A. Ate at Hams had their turkey triple deck sandwich and home made potatoes chips, 16 oz beer, mash potatoes and mushrooms - no problem. Operation made a big difference in my life. Guest guest
HI N I am guessing that what you have described is a spasm most of the people in this group know the signs only too well. Mine are always from the chest up and they seem to stop almost at my jaw line and sometimes the most intensive part of the spasm seems to be in the neck/throat area. Other times its more painfull in the chest area. I am just wondering though did you not have spasm's before as you sound unfamiliar with them. Or maybe I have read your post wrongly. let me know nprosciak <nprosciak@...> wrote: Its been 2 years since I have had the surgery done to help with my achalasia.
