Hi Sally. It is good to hear from you, but sorry that Stefan

is having problems again.

I have not had a myotomy but I understand that it is not

unusual to have to continue drinking a lot of water to get

your food down. I have had the manometry and it was

not a horrible experience for me, but it was far from

pleasant. I don't think they can do the test if you are sedated.

It will last about 30 minutes and is soon forgotten. He might

feel a bit of irritation in the nose and throat for a bit.

I know it is horrible to watch your child go through this and

my heart goes out to you both.

Good luck and hugs,

Maggie

Sally, I had the manometry done twice. It lasts about 30 minutes

and is not pleasant but is also not really painful. It is more

uncomfortable. You are not sedated but they freeze the throat and

nose. He may have a sore throat for a few hours after it is done.

hello Sally,

I can understand how you feel. My daughter is 16 and has achalasia

too. She had a dilation in december 2003 but will probably need

another treatment soon. It is hard to watch your child suffer. All my

sympathy and wishes of good luck and strength go to you and your son.

The manometry is pretty uncomfortable, something's stuck in your nose and

throat, and you get the feeling you need to throw up (which I did just

minutes before it was done). They make you drink water, that doesn't make

it better at all ...

My condition is about the same as Stefan's, but I had a dilatation in 2001.

I can eat pretty much everything, but still have to drink a lot and also

have these pains every few days, but most of the time they go away when I

eat or drink something.

And if not, I try to take very deep breaths, it seems that when my lungs

fill up, it pushes against the sore spot and that feels pretty good.

My GI tells me I have to see the specialist again, but I don't wanna. I

feel pretty good, and am not in the mood for exams and tests and stuff.

Just give me something that'll make the pain go away immediately, that's all

I need!

Thanks to you all for your helpful replies to my 'worried mum'post!

It's really good to be able to let my worries (on behalf of Stef),

out into the open, and to get various feedback to my queries. You are

much appreciated, and a lot more informed than some of the doctors

we've seen!

All the best

Sally
