Guest guest
Hi all. I'm a little nervous (okay, I'm kinda freaked) right now because I just woke up choking and I'm not sure what to think. It's been almost 6 months since my surgery and this is my first bout of choking. Should I be overly concerned? I'm not going to fool around with this so I'm going to schedule a barium to make sure everything is okay. I did have a big eating weekend, so I'm hoping that it's just I ate too much or maybe didn't chew well enough. I'm also wondering if it could be a little acid reflux (but I don't know how that feels). It always feels like the food goes down, but I'm nervous that some didn't for whatever reason. Any advice will be much appreciated.... in NYC

If it tastes like undigested food it could not be going down. I had a partial wrap. Recently a couple of weeks ago I woke up choking. It was definately acid and came from my stomache. Since I'm 7 months pregnant I assumed it was the pressure from the baby. Before my surgery I woke up choking twice. It was different though. I think it was saliva that was not going down. I understand how scary it is. Jenifer
Guest guest
Hi , A barium swallow will probably set your mind at rest. I don't remember if you had a fundoplication with your surgery. That should prevent stomach acid from getting up into your oesophagus. If you have reflux of acid from the stomach the acid is very acid and burns where ever it goes. Drinking water does always soothe it immediately, I find anyway. If you did eat a lot over the weekend there could have been a build-up at the LES (lower oesophageal sphincter) which is taking it's time to go through the valve to the stomach. Remember your oesophagus can stretch to accommodate what you swallow, so even if food has gone down it may not have got through the LES. Hope this helps you not to panic ! Guest guest
Thanks Jenifer for responding. Yes, I did have a partial wrap. I think it could have tasted like stomach acid, kinda burned the back of my throat. I spoke to my GI and he's prescribing an acid inhibitor for me. I am also going to get a new barium swallow done to make sure. He seems to think it's nothing to be concerned about, but wants the barium done to make sure everything is okay. I felt a little better after talking to him. It sure helps to hear that you had a few choking episodes after the surgery. It came unexpected so I got very worried. I did have a big eating weekend and this could be my body's way of reminding me that I can't eat like " normal " people. I have to slow down, chew and take smaller bites. Thanks again. PS: Wow, 7 months already?!! Almost time...getting excited/anxious?? Do you know if its a boy or girl? Any names picked out? > > Hi all. Guest guest
Thanks Joan. I did eat a lot this weekend and it could be body's way of reminding me not to eat so much, so fast and to chew, take smaller bites and slow down. I can't eat like " normal " people. I know about the build-up issue and I really want the barium swallow done to make sure everything is pretty much going down. I'm deathly afraid of causes my E to get any pouches or to stretch out. I also hope the barium shows my E has gone back to it's normal size (or at least shrunk a bit) because my E was shown to be very large after my first barium. Thanks again, in NYC PS: Yes, I'm calmer!! > Hi , > A barium swallow will probably set your mind at rest. I don't remember if you had a fundoplication with your surgery. Guest guest
, I guess it feels so good to feel normal again, we start thinking we can eat like normal people and forget that we still need to be careful! Sometimes if I get too careless and forget to wash it all down, I get food left in my esophagus and then I'll end up choking on it. You just need to chew well, and remember to wash it all down with water. I've also noticed that if I eat until I am full, it just won't all go down! I guess instead of our stomachs stretching out, maybe the food starts backing up in the esophagus??? That's what it feels like to me anyway. I'll end up gurging up my food if I over eat. Well, every now and then it's fun to have a food fest and enjoy feeling *normal* again! We just end up paying for it! I'm sure it wasn't anything to worry about, but I'm glad you're getting it checked out all the same. I had a barium swallow last month and it shows my LES is closed up and only a trickle of barium is getting through. I don't have a huge problem getting food down, but I always need to push the food down with a lot of water and air, and if I don't, the food won't go down, so it looks like I'm going in for a dilatation at the end of the month. Oh yea, my barium study did show that my E had narrowed since my surgery! Hope yours has too! Good luck, I hope everything's OK! Sandi Re: A little panicked... Thanks Jenifer for responding. Guest guest
Hi , I know what it's like to freak out when you have stuck food, choking, whatever AFTER your surgery. I'm almost 3 years post op and doing very well. One possible reason you might have choked is if you were laying on your stomach. I LOVE to lay on my stomach, and have had to train myself not to. How DO you train yourself to not sleep on your stomach when you are asleep??? I don't know, but for the most part, I have managed to do it, haha. IF I wake up choking, I am ALWAYS on my stomach. Thank goodness, I'm pretty good at staying off of it. I can sleep on my side just fine, but I guess if I sleep on my stomach it puts too much pressure on my E and makes the saliva back up sooner??? Anyway, I have had every scare you can think of post op to make me think " OOOOH NOOOO!!! " but they have all been isolated incidents, knock on wood. I sleep flat, no reflux, eat whatever, still get spasms, but I'm " ok. " To anyone post op...don't ever worry about an isolated incident or two. Or three. Just because something reminds you of what you were like pre op, it doesn't mean that you need to panic. Been there, done that, > Hi all. I'm a little nervous (okay, I'm kinda freaked) right now > because I just woke up choking and I'm not sure what to think. Guest guest
, Thank you soooooooo much for that post!! It made me feel so much better. Now I remember why I stay connected with this group. I'm still getting the barium swallow to make sure everything is okay. I don't want to fool around with this. I guess it's easy to forget about A when you're doing well. And then somethings happens and " oh my God, it's back. " The thing is, it's never gone. But it's treated and it's better...and that's what's important. *sigh of relief* Thanks again to all who gave advice. > > Hi all. Guest guest
Hi Sandi, I never feel that food is left in my E, so the choking episode really rattled me! It's almost 6 months post-op and I'm still nervous eating and wondering if all the food is going down. I think the barium will put my mind at ease or at least let me know what's going on down there. It's easy to get careless eating when it's not torturous and so easy to forget not to wolf down your food. I know what you mean about eating until you're full. My stomach always hurts, though I never feel the food needs to come back up. But then again, pre-surgery I never regurged anyway. Good to hear that your E has narrowed...hopefully mine has a little. Although it's only been 6 months (a week from today!!) I know you're nervous about the dilatation, but go with your gut and I'm sure it will turn out just fine. in NYC > > > Hi all.
