Hi everyone. I've not been diagnosed yet but I have all the

symptoms. I'm 29, have had problems with acid reflux in the past,

and have had terrible trouble swallowing for about 2 weeks. I feel

like I swallowed a tennis ball, when I burp food comes up, and now

I'm downright scared to eat. Food stays in my esophagas for hours.

I've read as much as I can and know that the first place to start is

with a barium x-ray, an endoscopy, and an esophageal manometry.

But how do I find the right doctor? I've looked in the databases

and haven't found someone in the Chicago area. But I did read that

the University of Chicago is in the top five.

Can anyone recommend a good gastroentologist in the Chicago area?

Thanks and good luck to all of you.

- I highly recommend calling at least 2-3 teaching hospitals in Chicago, ask for the GI department & ask if they have someone who specializes in swallowing disorders. Please keep us posted! Cindi in PA

Thanks Cindi. Using the database on this site, I saw that the University of Chicago is highly regarded in this area (top 5). I got on their website and found a Gastroenterologist named Winans that specializes in swallowing disorders. I'm waiting for his office to call me back.

I keep thinking this thing will go away on its own but know that I have to be proactive. Denial doesn't fix anything.

Thank you for the "swallowing disorders" advice. Hopefully Dr. Winans will help me.Cindi Wilmot <cindiscandles@...> wrote:

Hi ,

Hope you are doing ok! We've all been there, the not knowing SUCKS!

I just found out for sure last week (although, in my heart I already

knew). It is possible you have a stricture (given your history of

Acid Reflux). Guess you'll find out for sure soon. Don't worry, no

matter how this thing plays out......we're here for you and we know

how you feel. Keep your chin up! Smile, come on...you can do it!

There, that's much better! ;) Please don't despair (easier said

than done, I still do sometimes :( ) things do get easier! Talk

to you soon!
