Excess mucus with swallowing difficulties?

O.K. now this one isn't me but I thought I might present it to this

group as long as I am here and I wasn't sure how to handle this

situation in public. Here it is. I belong to a Sewing Club and we

had a Luncheon. One of the ladies at my table started caughing, like

you would if you swallowed down the wrong pipe and we all gave her a

minute to regain herself. But the coughing continued and the mucus

was spewing and I kept trying to calm her because I myself had been

through the whole " can't swallow thing " (never the mucus part

though). She asked the waiter for more napkins - and these were the

big cloth type - several. Everyone else at the table thought she was

just choking on a big bite of food - but I suspected something more

familiar. She kept saying " oh no, no it's nothing. "

I have been thinking of this lady very much since finding this group

and getting help for myself that I am comfortable with. It bothers

me to think that she is continuing to suffer so if it is something

like this.

#1 - Does Achalasia cause excessive MUCUS spewing in some victims?

#2 - Should I approach this sewing club member at the next meeting

and what would be a kind or appropriate way to do so?

Joy, I had a lot of mucous until I had my dilatation and she could well have been producing mucous because something slipped down the wrong way or got stuck. However Debbi's recommendation is a nice way to approach her.

Sometime people who are allergic to something also react with excessive mucous eg. milk allergy and it takes some determined coughing to get rid of the plug.

So I'm not aware of any excess

mucus PRODUCTION, but there certainly is excess mucus RETENTION among

people with swallowing

difficulties.

When this topic (mucus and

saliva) came up some time ago, I found an article about excess salivation

that said that although cases are often written up as though the patient

has excess salivation, in cases where they actually measured the flow of

saliva they found that the amount of saliva was normal. The real problem

was that the patient was not swallowing normally. For some disorders what

seems to be excess salivation may be the first symptom of a bigger

problem. Medications can also be the cause.

P.S. I am not going to provide a link. ;-)
