Guest guest
I haven't heard of anyone here in the group getting both diagnoses.... I know that swallowing difficulties can result from scleroderma (due to hardening of the tissues resulting in a loss of peristalsis/mobility), but I've not heard of anyone getting diagnosed w/ scleroderma and also having manometry show achalasia of the LES at the same time. Have you been diagnosed as having both????Debbi in Michigan Does anyone who has been diagnosed with achalasia also have a diagnosis of scleroderma? Guest guest
No, I have not been diagnosed with both but my doctor has suspected I might have scleroderma due to high ANA, 1:1280. It would actually be a relief to find that you cannot have both!
Guest guest
Well, since they don't know what causes either disease, I don't know that you can say you *can't* get both, but I can say that I've never heard of it. The only times I've ever run into mention of scleroderma and achalasia at the same time is b/c they're both possible causes of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) - but then you'll also find Parkinson's, Lou Gehrig's/ALS, MS, stroke, and a handful of other disorders on that same list. It is probably POSSIBLE to have Lou Gehrig's and Parkinson's both, but I've never ever heard of anyone that did, ya know??? Guest guest
There was someone that had posted that she had MS and Achalasia, but I’ve not heard of Scleroderma or Parkinsons, etc. I worry about MS for myself, especially since my mom and sister have/had it. My sister always worries that I might have it too since I have some symptoms. Well, I get to see a neurologist in a couple of weeks…. . I think the correct term for achalasia due to scleroderma is " pseudo achalasia, " but I see it referred to as simply achalasia. As Debbi pointed out, the problem with the LES is different, but the result is much the same. I get to see a neurologist in a couple of weeks… I have been wondering if you ever got to ask a neurologist all those question you had gathered. I guess that hasn't happened yet. notan
Guest guest
I was diagnosed with scleroderma and achalasia 20 years ago. I am glad the dr's turned out to be wrong. The way they explained it to me at the time was this: Achalasia is technically a symptom, the failure of the les to relax and the loss of motility in the " E " . Therefore scleraderma of the GI track can " cause " Achalasia, just like " C " . The blisters the DR's saw in my " E " turned out to be a symptom of Dermatitis Herpetiformis and not Scleraderma. Good luck. > There was someone that had posted that she had MS and Achalasia, but > I've not heard of Scleroderma or Parkinsons, etc. I worry about MS for > myself, especially since my mom and sister have/had it. Guest guest
Hi notan :-) I was wondering where you had gone to, haven’t seen you post in awhile. No, I haven’t been to see the neurologist yet, but the clock is ticking. Only 13 days, 14hours and 50 minutes to change my mind.( I’m just kidding). I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for thinking of me. There has been little I felt interested in replying to, and I have been away from my computer a lot latly. Also, I am still having a lot of messages from this group not show up in my inbox. I had to go to the wab site to find your reply. The thought of having to go hunt down the replies to my messages makes me hesitant to post. notan
