Thanks, notan.

In checking into the causes for my particular sleep problem, it looks like one big underlying issue in the inability to remain asleep, is depression.

No wonder, with the crummy year I've had.

Still, possibly a sleep study might be helpful.

I work down the street from Sepracor. I know they just got an approvable letter for Estorra which does help people to stay asleep. This means that it is not approved yet, but will be sent to the approval committee with a strong recommendation for approval. I would guess it will be available in a few weeks to a couple months. Here an excerpt from their press release.

Sepracor announced that it has received an "approvable" letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its New Drug Application (NDA) for ESTORRA brand eszopiclone 2 mg and 3 mg tablets for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep, and/or difficulty maintaining sleep during the night and early morning for adult and elderly patients, and a 1 mg tablet for elderly patients whose primary complaint is difficulty falling asleep. The FDA has not requested additional clinical or preclinical trials for final approval.

And this is the form of insomnia where the patient can get to sleep fine. This is for people who wake up after sleeping only 3or 4 hrs,not able to get a full nights sleep.I have been having this problem for the past 3-4 months, and besides this possible achalasia, I have terrible trouble sleeping. My family doc prescribed elavil. At first it worked great. But now,it's not helping me get a full nights sleep, and whats worse is the bad side effect of dry mouth.Ach!I was just wondering if you are aware of any new medications targeted towards people who just can not Stay asleep? Thanks,Jan in Northern KY.

Pete,

Thanks for the information.

I am definitely not satisfied with taking Elavil for this particular application.

The side effect of "dry mouth" is very difficult to live with.

From what I have read, this aspect of insomnia has a direct correlation with depression. For me and the "non specific" motility disorder, it would be nice if I could also have a decent nights sleep. Going to sleep at 11:00pm and waking up at 3:00a.m., makes it hard to function.
