Guest guest
Hi, You know, I did not mean to start a homeschool discussion. I definetely did not want anyone to feel defensive, like they need to defend why they use the school systems, or why they do not. My philosophy has always been that every family should do what is best for their family. I do not put people down for sending their children to public school! Though I must admit that many people do not give us that same consideration. ( I am not talking about anyone on this list!) I am speaking only for me and my family. I had a very bad public school experience. My husband did too. When our oldest was born we decided to homeschool because we did not want her to have to go through the same thing. But since then our reason for homeschooling has changed. If I was to give one reason now it would be because I love being with these great kids here. I look at them, growing up so fast, and know that they will be going out on their own before I wish they would. But for now we are together and having a great time. For those who do not understand why anyone would homeschool, when the schools are great, maybe now you will understand. As good as public schools may be they would still take my kids away from our home 8+ hours a day. And then there is homework that would need to be done. For US homeschool works. I know not everyone even has the option to homeschool. It is drain on finances to have one parent home. I understand that not everyone wants to homeschool, that is great. And I know that you all still love and adore your children. No one is wrong in this debate, we all just want the best for our beloved children. And for anyone out there who is a teacher I do have a couple thing to say. First, you have a very hard job and I hope that everyone you meet appreciates you, for they should! I really do not know how you do it. You have my highest respect. Now back to Tae Bo. Candace Please excuse the typos, I got kicked in the elbow last night in karate. The elbow that was already injured. Typing is a challenge

Guest guest
Thanks for the message about teachers. I really do appreciate it. My concern with home schooling is the social aspect. I am sure your children are more academically advanced due to you being able to provide lessons geared towards their needs and you can challenge them more. However, school is so much more to my 4 kids than just learning Math and English. This is where there peer group is. This is where my son get the opportunity to play for the school baseball team and my daughter get to be a High School cheerleader and go to the prom. This is where my 7 year old gets to be on stage in a talent show and my 8 year old gets student of the month. I am sure your children have access to all sorts of social situations. But I can't imagine my kids not being given the chance to do these thing in school.

But this is not always the case for many students. I am happy for your children, more power to them. I share in your pride for them! But I know so many children that are unpopular, lonely, ridiculed, and depressed. And my heart always goes out to them. There is a local homeschool group here which offers, co-op classes, PE classes, lab classes, field trips, parties, graduation, musicals, plays, football, basketball, baseball, (competitive), music, and more. There is a Learning Center that offers the use of computers and software to those who do not have one in the home. We pick and choose what we want to participate in. We also help out where needed. We take karate classes twice a week and race bmx bicycles on weekends. Several times a month the kids go and visit with several senior citizens that they have befriended in the closest town. Anymore social activities and we would need more days in the week. Homeschool, private school, or public school....it is all wonderful. I would never tell anyone that they should homeschool. Anymore than I would tell people to be vegetarian or Christian or anything else. Choices...that is what makes life such a joy. My brother and I were very fprtunate to have an awesome education thanks to the wonderful NY State Schools ( NOT NYC) but our elementary and middle school educations were very high quality. QWhen we moved to Texas we were several years ahead until we reached high school. Again, we were blessed with a wonderful high school. HOWEVER, to my dismay I've watched the schools in San fall short of sparkling the last few years. And I've visited other schools in the nation on my travels with band and I can say that many are very sorely lacking. If I were a parent I would have to take my child's individual school into account when I decided whether or not I home schooled. Ideally I would have access to some sort of voucher system, but <sigh> that may never happen. At first I REALLY wondered about children who were home schooled. I dated a guy when I was younger who was homeschooled. He was brilliant but he was a bit odd, then I realized it was just his personality. Later on a co-worker of mine introduced me to his 3 children that were homschooled. Not only did each child play a musical instrument, but they were fluent in 3 languages and were were working on math I didn't work on until I was in high school. The oldest child was 12 years old!!! I think the thing I never realized about home schooled children was that they met with other home schooled children quite often. In fact many people I know have their kids going to different house or churches on different days for classes. I know it will never be exciting as being able to participate in the marching band or football team, but I definitly think it is a wonderful thing for a child when the school system they are presented with is lacking. Who wonders if any of you education gurus knows anything about available vouchers for San residents who live outside the famed Edgewood School District. AND BTW Romie I have a bid in on a child's violin. If I get it, there will have to be some rules set up on being nice to Mr. Violin. :-)
Guest guest
Hi -It's obvious that you don't understand how homeschooling works, nor do you care for this concept, but I feel I do have to clarify an assumption you have made and then this issue will be a dead subject, at least for me. First, Candance and I shouldn't have to justify our decision to homeschool our children on an exercise board. Second, you have assumed that my children have never attended school functions, nor could they be a cheerleader, play sports, etc. Nothing is further from the truth. As a homeschooled child (at least in our state) both of my children were allowed to attend any class, play any sport and attend all the dances at our highschool. Their social lives have have been full, both with their fellow peers and through their church. Yes, my daughter was never a cheerleader, but she chose never to be one, but she did play soccer and she did attend many dances. My son chose never to be a jock, but he does play golf and he too has been to many dances. I'm extremely proud how my two children have turned out. Both children are loving, outgoing, caring, intelligent and extremely giving of their time. In closing, no one is wrong in this issue. We have all done what we thought was best for our children. I'm sure you've done an excellent job with your children, as well.
Guest guest
Candace, I agree with you. I am sorry about my message last night. Yesterday was a horrible day. One of my students who had leukemia died Tuesday night. He was at Duke University receiving a cell transplant and the whole school thought he was doing better. The atmosphere at our school yesterday was devastating. Grief counselors and students in hysterics. This student was very much loved and the whole community rallied around him this year to help him. Just a horrible day. good luck to you and your children. Perhaps someday all 8 of our kids could get together. We could Taebo!!!

It makes you really appreciate what you have when you realize that someone has lost their child. If anyone wants to read this mother's journal you can search for it under " 's Page " on the web.
